installing hard drive question

i have the case open and the old drive out, but on the old drive it has this plastic sheet covering the hd's circuit board, should imove this on to the new drive? i noticed the plate that then screws on is metal...

 

If you can, you should It's not a must to get it work though.

 

you should deffinately move this to the new drive, notice the copper sheeting on the door, the plastic stops the drive shorting out on the door.

if you do not put the plastic sheet on it may not boot up (thats what others have found)

that was what I thought thanks for the reply, on another note... the new hard drive (a 160gig samsung 5400) was full of bad sectors. It had 9 by the time to got to 50 percent of the scan compared to the 3 on my old 100gig fujitsu. Do all hard drives come with these things? I used the Salvation Data program to find these errors, any comments about that company? they are what comes on the ultimate boot cd.

I am starting to wonder if I should just return the drive and make due with the 100 gig I had before. Would a windows reinstall fix the error messages I am getting in windows event viewer?

Event ID - 51 - An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation

harddisk 1 being the second partion of the main disk it self

 

To be honest I have never tested a new drive for errors, I have had corupt sectors on an old drive, I had an external HDD case and the power came off and on as it was copying and rendered the drive useless with corupt sectors, I still havent been able to get ot going again, there is software out there than can repair damaged sectors but that is very odd to have that many errors on a new drive, would send it back and get one of these;

First, make sure the program does not report bogus bad sectors. Use the command 'chkdsk /f/x/r' in Windows to check for bad sectors. if that doesn't report bad sectors, then I suspect your program gave false positives.

If chkdsk does report bad sectors:

A new hard drive should have ZERO bad sectors. Return your HDD ASAP.

Also check samsung's webpage for a SMART tool to check the hardrive.

 

You'll need to go to the HDD manufacturer's website and get the diagnostic tools for that HDD. You can usually run a full test which might retest bad sectors (depends on the program) to see if the are really bad.

I don't think you're getting bad sectors. I had heard that some Samsung laptop HDD models actually have firmware issues (which explains the really appealing price of their 250GB but doesn't mean anything if it crashes every five seconds). You might want to steer clear from them. Take it back and swap it for a different model.
