two asus laptops have exploded in the past?? one in 2005 and one in 2006? i just saw a news about this (on a chinese website). the 2006 one happened in feburary.. and the explosion was quite bad (there were pics and its pretty disturbing, the owner was lucky he was just away)

so does everyone know about this? but just think they are the one in 10 million cases? but its sure disturbing to learn of this fact and seeing the pictures (i think if the owner was infront of it, he might've gotten killed... and he only uses it for normal office apps..)

n this is the only exploding laptop case i think... so are asus laptops REALLY that well built?!?!?!?? The article doesnt seem to suggest so, saying that we should treasure life and stay away from asus hahaha..

any opinions?? i have my mind set on buiyng the z96j pretty much already.... but now.. im thinking maybe i should reconsider? get a e1505 that at least not tht well built, wont explode?!?!

tell me im just being paranoid...

the only thing that could explode are the batterys. which asus doesnt make only re brands. same as exploding cell phones. thats like blaming ford for the firestone tires that blew up. it was the tire not the car.

but if its part of the product they are selling, shouldnt they be responsible for making sure its fine?!?! or did the battery not come with asus or sth...

I have heard of laptops exploding. Like the HD explodes and ruins the laptop. And batteries. I'm sure It has nothing to do with the design. Perhaps there was a voltage problem and it exploded because it got twice the voltage it needed. I don't know... But it's still not going to steer me away from Asus.

oh by the way.. i dont wanna waste space creating another thread.. so i mite as well jsut ask this here...
i noe this might sound really stupid to some people.. but i just need to know
if i buy a laptop without an OS pre-installed. what are the procedures to installing one? I've never had this experience.. so i just want to know that it's for sure something i can do, like slicing a cake or something (which i assume it is). Cause i can buy windows xp pro at my school for 15$ XD

You basically just insert the Windows XP CD and answer as prompted by the installation process.

I reckon it can be a little confusing and tricky for a first timer but it shouldn't pose a great deal of trouble. Otherwise I am almost certain someone at your school will be happy to lend you a hand.

that thing caught fire not sure if it exploded. But concidering asus makes the latpops for sony apple and dell worrying about buying an asus is dumb. That can happen to anything although i think it would be very rare.

Ever since you first posted this the insurgents in Iraq are using Asus laptops as IED's now. You and CNN should must have worked together giving away Allied locations in the first Gulf War.

Just wait until 60 Minutes gets wind of this. We'll have another fiasco like they did with Audi's and 'unintended acceleration' back in the '80's.

Don't know about you guys, but from the look of it; seems like someone company that doesn't like Asus over loaded the battery and blew it up. If you look at the pictures, sure there's a lot of dust on that table, but the next table is almost sparkling clean. There's no dust on the printer? o.0 OK, so the printer wasn't there when it blew up? And if you look at the next table, under the monitor and printer, there's sorta a ring around it, but the top of the machines are not dusty; and the dust isn't where it should be in some spot if every machines were there when the explosion occur. Sorry, but i don't buy it ^_^.

Was the pencil there when it blew up?.. Looks a bit too clean; and why would someone put a pencil there after it blew up?

Looks like they wasted 1 machine but were not willing to risk other ones in this attempt to scare consumer away from Asus product. CHEAP. Can't even make it look real - -".

This is ridiculous, technically anything can happen to almost any electronic gadget at anytime, but who's to say that someone didn't rig that laptop to explode. The damage to the bottom of that laptop is quite extensive, I don't buy that it just happened out of the blue, under normal circumstances. No matter the circumstances, this is definitely an isolated incident, much higher than 1 in 10 million!!! If it was true, and happened often, It would be much more common knowledge, It would be leaked and covered all over the net.
If you're serious about reconsidering buying an Asus laptop based on this, then you do need help :)

Maybe someone had a grudge with the owner/user???

explosions like that usually happen when you take the heatsink of a CPU but the cpu is tied to the motherboard too hard for it to escape, such as it being plastered to the motherboard with some type of high density alloy..

The heat generated quickly reaches few hundred celsius and attemps to project the CPU out, but it can't, so it takes the whole board with it. I've seen it before on desktops at my school. Let's just say "we experiment" when the teacher is not looking, such as blowing up mobos, power supplies, throwing monitors down 20-30 stairs and saying its an accident, etc.

Ha Ha Classic!! we tried to throw a massive 4m pole through a CRT monitor, bounced off like it was a match stick!

This sounds like the beginnings of an urban legend, I think this story is fake!

Like Mystery explained you normally have to do some major mucking about to get things to explode (capacitors explode nicely in fire too).

I would be interested to read the text, to see what the explanation was, but I do like how they clearly cleaned off the identifying stickers on the Asus for display.......

it looks like a hoax to me.

    2 things.
    1) If the battery over heated and explode, chance is you probably won't beable to clear the whole battery part out that easily to take picture the way it is.
    2) If it does explode like that, the notebook won't be sitting on the table. The battery was blown to bit, and you are telling me the laptop didn't even move? Whoever made this up didn't study physic.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't battery contain acid inside? Oh what? They evaporated?.. Lies!

Bet you, they used firecracker to blew it up.

Optical drives can easily explode if done right. Dunno about serious damage but i had a dvd explode in mine. Didnt go through the protective shielding but made a loud noise. I cleaned it out and it worked after. It was a desktop drive and the dvd already had a small crack in it.................
