Okay, so I just recieved my asus s96s, and I am a little confused on what the general consensus on recommendations is to do. The sticky says uninstall asus live update, while other members say to run it and update the bios!? If some people can just lead me in the right direction, and give me some general pointers on what I should do, if I should update my drivers / how to see if they need to be updated etc, it would be apprecaited!! I also plan on writing a formal review soon, as there seems to be none on the site(?)

Having the lastest bios is always best.

You might want to try Laptopvideo2go drivers for your video card. Make sure you use the modded .INF file.

Also there is a a review of the S96s already.

the S96s is a "Verified by Intel" model, meaning you can find all the drivers, etc. on Intel's website

It is good to use the newest bios(generally). IT is very easy to update bios. USE or download the asus update utility first. Then download the newest bios listed on the intel's site. open up the update utility , and use it locate the newest bios that u just downloaded(follow the instruction-wizard) and then click FLASH. "flash" is just a fancy word for update or overwrite in lamens terms. :D

I've been having problems installing the Realtek audio drivers on my S96S. I did a fresh install of XP Pro and installed the Intel chipset drivers first. When I installed the audio drivers off the included cd, an error message popped up (can't remember what it said). So afterwards I removed the drivers & software thru the Add Remove Software control panel, rebooted, and tried installing again. Same error message came up. So finally I uninstalled the drivers and software again and tried to manually update install the driver via device manager, but that didn't work either. I can't even remove Realtek HD Audio from the device manager, I get a "failed to uninstall the device" error message.

Any suggestions on what to do short of reinstalling XP?

It's been a while since I installed WinXP pro on my S96S, but i remember having a lot of problems with the audio aswell. I eventually fixed it by installing an MS hotfix called Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio (filename: sp32646.exe), then installing the faulty pci device in the device manager, and finally putting on the realtek hd audio drivers. That fixed it for me atleast, hope it works for you too.
