I just sent back my G51vx-rx05 to frys.com because of overheating issues. I paid $1149.99 for it and they are crediting it back tomorrow. Newegg has the x1a on sale for $1299.99. I can possibly scrape up the $150, but is it worth it?

The processor on newegg's is a p8700 and the screen is 1920x1080. That's only difference i think, except for the black screen cover compared to the cool white of the rx05.

I'm asking this because i'm not sure if the upgrade in processor will really be that significant, and it seems the upgrade in resolution my be overkill for a 15.6 inch monitor.

If you were in my shoes, would you scrape, and i mean literally scrape up that extra $150 and grab the one on newegg before the sale ends, or just have fry's replace your rx05?

There's also the difference between the webcams (1.3 MP v. 2.0 MP) though this probably isn't a big factor in your decision.

the overheating was one of the processor cores idling almost 20c above the other core. Would idle at 66c where the core 0 would idle around 48c.

i was reading another thread that was saying it looks like the newegg version (x1a) is not upgradeable to quad core processors because the mobo's are different than the rx05. Noone seemed to know for sure tho. If that is the case i may just stick with the rx05 so i can upgrade it to a q9300 or something later.

    Anyone know anything about this?

The RX05, X1A/X2A, and A1 variants all have different motherboard revisions. The RX05 is confirmed to not support quads. Trust me, I've tried.

0.7 MP isn't much of a difference anyway.

oops, i was reading your sig wrong this whole time forge. Thought you had put a q9100 in your rx05.

So do you know if the xa1 is compatible with quad's?

Also, do you think the upgraded resolution and p8700 is worth $150 more?

No one that I know of has tested quad compatibility in the Newegg models. Could be compatible, might not be compatible.

The P8700 is only a .53 GHz increase. They have the same L2 cache and TDP. I would say no, it's not worth the upgrade.

Then again, you're asking if it's a good upgrade along with all the other stuff you get in an X1A. In that case, definitely yes.

I was also comparing the ones from newegg versus xotic pc.

The newegg one, g51vx-X2A, comes with a T9600 CPU for $1599.
XoticPC, g51vx-A1, comes with a Q9000 CPU and an extra 320GB HD for $1639, however, I really wanted the T9600 over the Q9000, so this bumped the price to $1976 at xotic. You cannot remove the extra HD, btw.

To me it seems that Xotic is charging about $377 more, just for an extra 320GB HD which sells for $73 at newegg.

Is xotic overcharging, or is the hardware in xotics better? Is the motherboard better? Are they adding more stuff than I am missing?

Anyway, with this dilema, I am still in a holding pattern for i7 (51j) with win 7 on it. Unless they give a really good deal on these g51vx when that releases.

It's an X1A (2.53 Duo) not an A1 (2.0 Quad), the X1A does not include the bag or the mouse or the EEe Stick.

What it does include over the RX05 as some have mentioned:

    1. 2 Year ASUS 360 warranty (overnight shipping paid by ASUS).
    2. 1 Year ASUS Accidental Damage Protection.
    3. Bluetooth.
    4. Better Processor 2.53 vs 2.0
    5. Much Better Screen True HD (1920x1080). A must if you plan on a BluRay upgrade down the line for mobile movie greatness.
    6. Better Webcam (if you use them)

Components aside the 2 year warranty along with 1 year ADP and not having to deal with Geek Squad for repairs is more than worth the $$$ difference. Not to mention you can earn cashback if you go through BING.com to buy from NewEgg.

This was something I was wondering about, actually. Does the Fry's model have the ASUS warranty or is it toned down like Best Buy's?

yeah, the fry's one has the asus warranty. One reason i went with it over BB.

Think i'm just gonna save the $150 as i can upgrade the processor down the road and the screen doesn't mean that much to me since this isn't a desktop replacement, i have an awesome desktop for high end gaming. Also i don't plan on installing blu-ray as i'm not much of a mobile movie watcher and my blu-ray watching always happens in my home theatre with 7.1 surround and 73" 1080p tv, so 15.6 inch blu-ray sounds underwelming.

Thanks guys, helped me make up my mind.

also the newegg one doesn't appear to come with a mouse and case.

If you do a lot of photo editing like me, the higher resolution screen is extremely useful. Also I want to make sure my blu-ray are 1080p. I don't always get to use my home theater since I travel a lot. 1080p on a laptop with some good headphones can be very impressive. I've used 1600x1200 on a 15" screen and it is very useful if you have 20/20 vision. This resolution will be hard for the video card to push on newer games though. And when you scale down resolution you lose a little image quality, so if your primary concern is gaming, lower resolution may be better.

.7MP and .53GHz is significant, IF you have use for these.

XoticPC costs more for upgrades because they don't deduct the price of what they remove, they just charge you for what they put in. Upgrade yourself and sell the extra stuff on Ebay.
