I've had keys suddenly come off before, but I was always able to snap it back in. This time, the letter A came off, and I can't snap it back innothing is chipped or damaged, but I can't seem to hook the top part of the retainer under the metal because it can't go under it.
How likely is it that Asus will send me a replacement keyboard? I am 1 year into my 2 year warranty. My reseller told me that there is a chance that they would replace it for free, although the damage is considered "physical" as keys don't just suddenly come off (but it did!)
Are there any suggestions on how I should phrase the problem to the telephone rep. when I call to increase chances of a free keyboard replacement?

I'm going to call on Monday.
Anyone else who can offer tips? I thought I could just go to my reseller to resolve the problem, but the reseller told me to go to Asus -
There is a pretty good chance of getting the keyboard replaced. Try to get them to cross-ship a new keyboard to you, there is no point in staying without a laptop for a couple of weeks for a key.
There's no need to worry about the "physical defect" stuff unless you actually mistreated the key. I have seen poor workmanship on ASUS keyboards before where some keys just "fall off" after a while (namely, my ASUS F6Ve).
In the meantime you can move one of the less used keys (e.g., "Right click" key) on the location of the damaged key.
Worst case, you just get the keyboard from the ASUS eStore for USD20. -
Where can one find instructions for replacing the keyboard on an Asus notebook? I haven't been able to find any service manual for my n81vp-d2.

I've had a key come off - Asus sent me a whole new keyboard, no questions asked. Did not need to give them a deposit or send the broken one back.

I cross-shipped my keyboard to Asus. However, Asus did take my credit card number in case I didn't ship the faulty keyboard back.
My reason for a keyboard exchange was that one of the keys was slanted and not aligned properly. -
woohoo, I called Asus, it seemed like a pretty easy process to get the keyboard replaced
but the rep. did say there was a chance that I would be charged if they inspect the keyboard and find that it was categorized as non-warranty covered damage--what are the chances of that happening D:
Now I have to send the fax to them to get the keyboard, yay!
key from keyboard fell off :(
