Greetings forum members. I am currently in the market for a laptop cooler that would work well with my w3j. As such, my needs are:

    • matches w3j form factor (compact is nice)
    • performs well
    • no need for extra gimmicks like speakers or ports
    • reasonable price

I realize that I could have posted this in the accessories section but I really want to emphasize that I want this to be as compatible to my Asus laptop as possible, so I would appreciate if the mods did not move this post. Thanks :)

Antec's notebook cooler..... I've bet on these for the last 2-3 years and haven't found one that's nicer or matches these systems better.

I love Lian-Li - we've been building systems with their cases for 5-6 years now..... that cooler is great - but only for table top use. If you're looking for something to use on your lap for some reason, the Antec is going to be nicer for that situation. For table top use, the Lian-Li is great though, especailly if you like the inclined placement of the laptop.

Thanks for your replies so far. I should have noted that I'm going to be using the cooler while my laptop is on my desk. And i have an external LCD when Im working on my desk so an inclined position doesnt really help there. I guess I want to make sure that performance is top notch and that the noise level of the cooler fan(s) is bearable. Also ive been reading a lot about Vantech coolers. Any opinions on those?

I have the Vantech Lapcool 2 for my w3j and I think it works quite well. The design is pretty simple- just a flat rectangle with two fans on either side. I fiddled with the position of my w3j to get maximal cooling- I was trying to get one of the fans right on the hot spot under the right side of the laptop. But then I discovered it works best if I just put it on normally with a spacer at the back. What I mean by this is I have something propping up the w3j from the cooler. I also have the cooler propped up by 4 rolls of hospital tape. I use a usb keyboard so its nice to have the w3j a little higher. My girlfriend thinks this setup looks pretty funny but I think its nice for a desktop replacement. There might be different versions of the lapcool2 but I have the one that you can plug into the usb or dirctly into the wall. The wall provides much more power and cooling ability. It has a dial that you can change the rpms on the fans so Im able to find a good balance of cooling and noise. The noise isnt too bad but the laptop fan is obviously quieter. Once I have the cooler on tho it blends in quite well- not like the aspire breeze one I heard about- apparently its like a jet. The performance of the lapcool2 is quite good. Without the cooler I found that my w3j was cycling between 50C and 60C consistently with normal use. With the cooler and under normal use the w3j cpu stays at 50C with a few spikes(2 C up and down) here and there. Without the cooler and playing a game (oblivion) i was reaching 70 but with the cooler it looks like the temp stayed around 65. The HD stays at around 40-45 I think. I think it works pretty well overall and is quiet enough. I could post some pictures of my setup if you want but Im sure you get the idea and the vantec site has some pics too. Hope this helps.
    Good luck
    Dan
