i turned powermizer off. the gpu is not downclocking (monitoring it with rivatuner). just that when it reaches 97 degrees it just slows down like a car running out of gas. (pulsing slowdowns)

sometimes it will go past that threadshold and just play fine at 107ish degrees for quite a while, when eventually it will hit 110 and start cutting off really really bad. (like a drop to 1-2fps for 5 seconds)

i have no idea whats going on at 97 degrees. the fans are not helping either. the CPU doesnt get past 60 degrees so they never come on at full blast. before i sent it in the first time around they would turn on at full blast by 80-90ish degrees on the gpu. but then again, before i sent it in, even if the fans were blasting the temp would still top out at 110.

anyone got a clue? im thinking its the drivers that dont let it go get past 97 degrees so often this time. i'll try the good ol 169 series too.

Given the postion you are in you really are stuck sending it in.... This is going to be a hardware or bios type issue and nothing any of us can say will change or help fix that. It sucks because I feel your pain trust me... But its just one of those pain in the butt things to deal with.

Maybe they will do better this time around. Do like I do, put a note and say dont return or close this case without the tech calling... I made the guy who worked on my RMA notebook call me about my issue. Next day, they ended up sending me a BRAND NEW one... Grant it I was less than 30 days old so was a DOAR but still.

You got to be firm with them. In the end it costs you time but costs them money because all the shipping back and forth they have to eat... And just make sure to take pics of it when you get and send in to make sure if any damage happens you can show it was not how you sent it in case its damaged during all the fun shipping.

Good luck and do keep us posted on what happens.

downclocked the gpu to 350/500 (down from 475/700)

temps are still hitting 96 degrees (not as much) and the slowdowns are still there

    angry letter and RMA time

Yea it has to be a hardware issue... I would just put a letter with it, and also instructions telling them exactly what to do to reproduce your problem. If its playing a game than so be it... Let them play a few games for a few minutes so they cant just say its the one game...

It does suck trust me but they seem to think people like to RMA laptops and make things up unless we smack them in the face with the issue.

doesnt the card downclock automatically at 110 Celsius regardless of software?

if its got accidental protection and its really getting on your nerves, just open the notebook and short the video card and motherboard so everything has to be replaced, clearly they are ignoring the real problem and probably not doing anything useful, so I say force them, if you can.

    Good luck

Thats why he is getting the issue though, the card is overheating and downclocking itself to keep from physical damage... this is a bios thing not a software feature.

That being said maybe he can mod the bios on it to remove this and that way it will get hot and fry than they have to replace it.

As for the Accidental Damage, thats fraud but hey I would do it if I had it... Will get you a brand new laptop, haha. I actually wouldnt short anything I would just slam it on the ground to bust it and say my kid ran and hit the cord and yanked it across the room onto hard floor. haha than you know they will replace everything.

But for real maybe look at modifying the bios... The card would be fried so they wouldnt know any better, and if you really want to get them you can do some changes to kill the Mobo also... I wonder also if you just did a bios flash and crashed it mid flash and sent it in if they just flash the board or would just replace it for you and keep yours and flash it for the next person that needs...

    Anyway just some other options...

yes, at 110 it REALLY cuts off. like 1-2fps for about 5sec

the soft cutoff is at 96-97 tho. i'm experiencing pulsing slowdowns when it reaches that temp (fraps doesnt show a drop in fps). when that happens, i alt-tab and look at the temp history, i see spikes up and down 96-97 degrees. (like every other second).

and yes, if i could use accidental warranty, i would have done it in a heartbeat. fraud happened when these idiots started selling these laptops

This very well known issue is normal on most G1S's, and after spending days researching at, and stumbling across a workaround, I, like many G1S owners just accept it. There are many threads about it. Even from new, with a decent performing GPU driver installed, as soon as the GPU hits 96 degrees C, the jerking begins to happen. You can prevent it though, by putting Vista in SLEEP MODE, then waking it up, and then playing. Yes, Yes, I know, It shouldn't be neccesary, but that's just the way it is. When it's out of warranty, I may meke a few suggested mods.

However, even after doing the SLEEP TRICK, I've never seen mine hit 110, although some drivers do cause significantly higher temps than others. I can reccomend 175.19. I've tried many others, but always return to it. ! - 98 is normally the max. Time for a cleanout ??

came back from asus last week with a message on my answering machine stating that they "cleaned out the dust". "replaced the thermal paste" and " STRESS TESTED IT OVERNIGHT WITH THE GPU ONLY HITTING 77 DEGREES".

    right.

oh and the sleep trick doesnt work for me
