    Hi All,

I'm trying to figure whether an extended warranty is a worthwhile purchase. How likely would it be (based on M6N experiences) that the Z70V would need a problem fixed after one year? or two? I'm planning to buy a aystem early in July and put it through its paces over the next two months to make sure everythign works before I ship off to school and far away from my dealer. Good plan?

Post your experiences with problems, warranties and Asus notebooks!

    Thanks,
    Sandeep

Unless you did already, read the extended warranty sticky in the Hardware forums, it's pretty helpful.

After a year, the notebook should be good to go for the rest of its life, as long as it's not tortured and ran under normal circumstances...

    Hi Coriolis,

I definitely did read the sticky, but there seems to be mixed opinions on whether its a good idea or not. The original poster had an IBM which is known for its quality. I was specifically curious about Asus notebooks as they're reputed to have good quality, but I want to hear from others that they didn't have problems through their first year at all, or something of the sort.

    Thanks,
    Sandeep

I'll give you guys a heads up........ I've got systems celebrating their 5th year of use and they're still kicking really well and used every day..

In the last two years (since the first centrino M3 went out the door) I'd say (and knock on wood too, right?) that we've seen about a 1/4 of a % of systems have issues..... It's all in Asus motherboard, it really is...... You cpu isn't going to fail... you can count on their motherboard.... the lcd screens are really good and if it doesn't die under warranty, it's probably going to last for ever.... All you have to worry about is RAM... thats why we at least use Corsair for the lifetime warranty..... Then the hard drive... Seagate's drives have a 5 year warranty on them. The only reason I'd say you want to look out for the hard drive is becaseu if it dies you're going to lose anything you don't back up.... so you want to take care of it. But as long as you don't drop it and keep the system in a dry/cool place for the most part.... you'll have these systems for a long time without issue.

On a side note, the systems we have today are certainly even better than the systems we had 5 years ago. I'm not going to say they're going to last more than 5 years, but it surely can. For the most part you'll be hard pressed to even get sick of owning this system in 3-4-5 years.... You're going to find yourself craving new technology if anything and will be buying a new system because you want to, not because you have to.

    Thanks,
    Justin

The chances of any individial part that is on or off the mainboard is about 1-2%. All depends. Not all part failures are a result from bad equipment. I would say more then half of failures that occur in the first year are results of some kind of enviromental conditions. Overheating, shock, electrical impurities, physical damage and an array of other factors laptops can be exposed to. This really shoould not concern a customer who buys from a reputable dealer that does not outsource tech support and knows what they are doing on the phone. Over the last year an overwhelming majority of our rma was advanced part replacement. The customer having to return an entire laptop is almost a rarity when dealing with me for example. I cant speak for nobody else. You should always do your research on a particular dealer when you buy something like a custom laptop.

Well as you're saying you're mainly have problems with parts that a user can swap out themselves........ optical drive, battery, keyboard, ram, ac adapter, hard drive.... Those again would also be the weakest part of any system just due to the delicate nature of them.... sending an entire laptop back for those reason wouldn't be smart anyway.
