I've had some luck with ubuntu though it's not as stable as I like. Pretty much everything works out of the box. You need to upgrade to the latest bios to take care of the cpu scaling in linux and you need to install a newer version of ALSA to make the intel hda sound work. Also ATI cards and xorg/xfree are a bit notorious so don't expect a hassle free life if you want DRI suppport or dual screen stuff or you want all the pretty translucency effects in gnome/kde to work. But it's possible given a bit of time.

good luck with it and if you find other distros that are more stable and work then please let me know!

I've tried WMware workstation (just to try linux distros without problems) on my W3V and I needed to reinstall a clean image because installation hanged and there was no way to remove virtual networks and so on...

    Hi,

I installed Gentoo ( www.gentoo.org) on my Asus Z63A last weekend. I used stage 3 and the 2005.1 handbook. Everything works fine for the moment.

I still have to install KDE and the drivers for WLAN. If that works I try to make a short guide.

Do you know if Ubuntu-Live CD will work w/o problems in a W3V? (last bios updated)

The first update of installing Gentoo on my Asus Z63A :asus: :

I did not have the time for making a website, but here are the steps I used to setup the laptop with Gentoo, KDE and WLAN enabled.
    - Start with the Gentoo 2005.1 handbook and follow the steps in Installing Gentoo:
    http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2005.1/handbook-x86.xml?full=1

    - For installation of WLAN I used the guide of
    http://www.informatix.or.id/willy/activating-centrino-on-linux.php

You need a network connection to install KDE (even with the package CD)

    - For installation of Xorg use:
    http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
Note: My logitech USB mouse and the touchpad are not detected by the auto configuration  , but you have to change the string /dev/mouse to /dev/input/mice in /etc/x11/xorg.conf

    - For installation of KDE use:
    http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-config.xml

I used the package CD for Xorg and KDE. This is the fastest solution. I can update the packages later. See the Gentoo handbook ( search for PKGDIR )

The Intel i915 chipset is not supported by the current stable version of Xorg. I updated xorg to version 2.6.9.15. This version detects the i915 chipset.

    - For resolution change (to 1280x768) see the information on:
    http://www.stud.ntnu.no/~gronslet/blog/linux-on-a-dell-x1-aka-samsung-q30

That's the status of my current installation. More and detailed information will be published on my website (I hope soon :) ).

    Hi there,
I seem to have got ubuntu working okay on the w3v. A badly written slocate script in my cron.daily list was causing the crashes!

All in all a very easy distribution to install and get working.

Has anyone had any luck with linux and an external display on the w3v? I am struggling to get xorg to cope with the idea of having a widescreen laptop panel and a standard external panel....sigh

    thanks
    Jeremy

    Hey there,
got it working, even tv out. I have a z63a though, so I don't know how it'll work with the ati. I'm also using ubuntu and I had to change my settings a bit from the ones I was using under fedora, so the xorg file might have to be tweaked a bit if you're not using ubuntu. Here's a link to another forum where I posted my xorg.

    Lots of fun!
