I was wondering, with the .5gb soldered onto the mobo, the listed maximum RAM is 1.5. But if I were to get a 2gb stick (they are way too expensive now, thinking down the line) would it recognize the 2.5gb total? would it still cap at 1.5GB, or would it flat out ignore the 2gb stick?

I think the motherboard will only recognize 2GB's. So I think it might ignore the extra 512MB's. The listed maximum is at 1.5GB's perhaps because 2GB sticks are quite rare and expensive. This is just a guess, but if it's like the D420, it will only recognize 2GB's and not 2.5.
