DDR2-533 modules would work just fine but the system will adjust the speed to run at 400MHz.
I think there's not much of price difference so I would get a 533MHz just in case. (well for the future purpose??)
I have a Kingston 1GB 533MHz in my W5A now and I have no problem with it. -
how many slot does the w5a have....
I've heard that they have 256 mb on board and 256 on a stick... -

That's correct, on the small systems (w5/s5/m5) 256mb is "on board" which means it's permanently on the motherboard. The system memory is 400mhz, so getting over that isn't going to do anything but it's not going to hurt either since the cost is basically the same.. I've had a 1gb ddr2 533 corsair stick running in on unit since the day we got them in, with no problems.

Open it up and see it for yourself. You only need a small screw driver. Also note that it might be little tight to open for the first time since the screws are placed with lock-tite but shouldn't be too hard.
Also when you screw back in, don't force it too hard. You will end up with broken parts. As long as it's screwed in securely enough, it's fine.
As for the open slot, there's none. You will be required to remove the 256MB RAM module in order to install a gig module.
So there's only one user accessible RAM slot.
BTW, you can't remove the on-board module since it's completely integrated onto the mainboard. (oh yeah, Justin just mentioned this..) -
I just heard from a local store that the black W5A, unlike the white one,
cannot be upgraded to 1.25Gb RAM, can anyone confirm if that is true? -

I 2nd what Justin said.
I am using it right now with 1.25GB RAM. I popped 1GB module (Kingston) and it's working just perfectly.
And mine is black and it was from Proportable.
