sorry... i've been told by my teachers that i'm too inquisitive, but my parents have always encouraged me to ask (or search :p) if in doubt... i've actually asked some of these before but not a lot of them got answered, perhaps cuz i've 'hijacked' someone else's thread, but then they just get burried REAL fast

i would've continued using the other thread i've started but i can't change the topic and i don't wonna mislead people that the thread's only about HD :p so here goes, please bear with me :D

    1) what's the "realtek pcie nic driver" doing on my menu? can i uninstall it? i did a quick search on google and found that it has 'something' to do with the ethernet card, so does it mean that my internet wouldn't work if i've uninstalled it?
    2) what's a good laptop cooler for it? i've been doing window shopping but none of them fits (the 'deepest' one i found was only 22cm and the depth of the G1 is 28cm/11"...) i know it's already quite cool already but i'm a maintanence freak and i wonna... er... maintain it :) i'm planning to use this lappy for at least 5 years (i'm no hardcore gamer so i wouldn't need top of the range stuff constantly)... oh another requirement would be that it's elevated at the back. my first choice for now is the new belkin cooler http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/10/belkin-intros-usb-powered-laptop-cooling-stand/ but AFAIK it's not out yet... anyone with anything similar?
    3) the mx518... the back/forward buttons above the thumb doesn't work for FF v2 for some reason, is it just me?
    4) how fast are your startup time after tweaking it and how many processes at startup?
    5) wot's the model of your LCD monitor (u can find out by using pcstrip or wotever program it's called)?
    6) how many of u have ur G1 come installed with lightscribe software? mine came with it but i've never tried it yet so i dunno if the DL drive i'm using is ACTUALLY capable of doing that yet (need to buy dvd's first :p)
    7) what's the difference between 'super performance', 'high performance' and 'gaming' modes? when i tried to configure them they all just showed 100% CPU power... so does this mean that they're all the same?

sorry for bombarding this lovely forum with my q's, and thanks in advance for all the answer! :D

    1) You can delete it from the menu but i wouldn't recomend you uninstall it as it is the driver for your ethernet card (that's what nic stands for, network interface controller ).
    2) can't answer that one, sorry
3)I see no reason for the back/forward buttons not to work in Firefox...have you installed the logitech software from the asus drivers and utilityes cd? If you did, follow these steps :
**go to Start -> All Programs -> Logitech -> Mouse & Keyboard -> Settings
**in the window that just opened you should see the settings for the mouse buttons. Buttons 4 & 5 are the ones you are looking for, just set the as Fwd & back instead of Generic....that should do the trick
4)i reinstalled the os on it, and i'm very pleased with it. It's blazing fast, unlike my PC, i can barely catch up with it :p. @startup i have 44 processes(haven't had time to tweak windows yet )
    5) haven't testet mine but i'm sure i saw a thread discussing this very question..try to do a search on the forums
6)as stated in previous threads the optical drive on the G1 is NOT lightsribe capable even though it comes with preinstalled lightscribe software
7)I expected the to see a difference in memory/core clock frequencyes of the video card but using Powerstrip to monitor them, i couldn't detect any. In all 3 modes the Card runs steady @ 400Mhz/450Mhz (memory/core). I'll have to look in to this and i'll get back to you... it made me curious :p

    4) how fast are your startup time after tweaking it and how many processes at startup?

Sorry, I can only answer this question. After doing a bit of tweaking, I get 41 sec bootup time. I use the program called "Bootlog XP" to measure my bootlog, lol.

Actually for No.7: based on the configuration, the only difference is the time before the system goes to idle (i.e. standby, monitor off, hibernate, etc.).

    7.

Those are only brightness settings for the lcd.

super performance only goes on in ac power.

Stamar, are you refering to the three profiles listed above or all the Power4Gear profiles?

Some of them actualy toy with the CPU freq as well...For instance Quiet Office mode sets the CPU to 2.00GHZ/997MHZ, regardless of functioning mode (AC Power or battery).

On a sidenote, i noticed that the notebook behaves a lot worse in games when running on battery regardless of the Power4Gear profile selected. It must be that the video card is downclocked otherwise i can't explain the performance difference (High Performance in bettery mode sets CPU @ 2Ghz/2Ghz). It would have been nice if Power4Gear had control over the videocard as well...i'll toy with it some more and come back with info

I'm also wondering if there's a difference between the Super Performance and High Performance Power4Gear profiles. They seem to be identical from what the app is telling me.

tried your suggestions regarding number 3

still doesn't work... it works with everything else (IE, windows explorer etc) but NOT firefox... i've even made sure that it's using the most updated drivers...

anyone else having the same problem?

I have had the same problem, but in Linux using Firefox. The alternative buttons to push for forward and back are Alt-right and Alt-left (I am talking about the up, down, right and left keys at the bottom right of the typical notebook keyboard) I have found these keys to be a little faster and I now use them in Windows as well as Linux, might be worth a try.

oops I just realized that you are talking about your mouse, Oh well not sure there, it probably has something to do with the mouse control center (varies by different manufacturers)
