my asus a8js died on me (i think something short circuited) so i'm having it RMA'd. with that said though I need a solution to backup everything that is on the hard drive on the 2nd partition (D:\ --> C:\ being the OS) where i stored most of my files. what solutions are there?
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Buy an 2.5" external case, put the A8's drive into it, and hook it up to a desktop. Then copy everything on D. Reinstall the drive into the A8, and send for RMA.

Or if you have a desktop with a spare SATA connection, you can just plug the A8Js' HDD directly in.

i should use a backup software to back it up to a cd/dvd media?? if i hook it up to my desktop will it conflict with my current OS since the notebook HD has an OS on it as well?
-
Backup software is not required. Also it will not interfere with your current OS. After plugging up the drive it will just appear as a second drive. Just find your files on it and copy them to where ever you would like to store them.

If you remove your hard drive, it'll void your warranty. That's what it says in my a8jp's manual.
How did your laptop die anyway? -
i don't exactly know "how" it died. i was using my laptop and it was low on battery. what i believe happened was that i did not close my laptop monitor all the way (papers were in between the monitor & the keyboard) when i was changing desks. when i opened up my laptop i noticed that it had turned off. i pressed the power on button and nothing happened. luckily enough i searched here and i found the solution of removing the battery & then just leaving the notebook plugged into the ac unit. that allowed me to "reset" the battery/circuit (w/e it's called) .. however my computer still couldn't POST. -

Yep, the external USB enclosure or SATA port are the easiest solutions. I can confirm it won't interfere with the current OS.
Another solution that doesn't require the removal of the HDD exists, if you already have or can get a hold of an external HDD. You can then download Knoppix (knopper.org), burn the ISO on a CD, boot from Knoppix and copy the files from the internal HDD to the external one.
But that's a bit more involved. -
but thanks anyways

Oh sorry didn't realize that. Should've read your first post more carefully
But you're ok with the external HDD then.
