Did you buy your laptop with Computrace software? If you did, there is a good chance of recovery. Also - was the notebook on/off and was it password protected?

How exactly did they steal it? Did you leave it unattended while you went to the bathroom?

Awwwwww dude. I @$#$ing hate bastards who have to do $@$# like that. Holy jeez.

Which school? So if I see one I can check it out, since not many people have that laptop.

I'm at York University, so if you also go there maybe we can keep an eye out.

It should be a student in YU, hmm~~ probably, we have to put it in a carry bag with me when going to a washroom. A laptop lock is not strong enough even use a heavy duty cutter to cut the lock out....

    man that is so sad.

my m6va is 1 week old tomorrow - i couldn't imagine how bad it would be to have it stolen.

mine has yet to leave the house, and i'm even a bit worried about having it in my backpack when i get the train home - even though if no-one can see it, it should make no difference.

laptop bags are a bad idea i reckon - i'm about to get a sleeve so i can put it in a normal bag

eBay would be prorably the number one place.

But besides that, they may keep it or sell it to a friend, etc.

Sorry to hear that. Very sorry.

I hope you find it or someone using it since pretty much no one has that laptop.

I always carry mine wherever I go if I am in the library.

Too risky and if I DID catch someone in the act, I would probably be kicked out of school for fighting. I would make the bastard pay for stealing.

Let's hope you find the person that stole it. Give him what he deserves.

Once again, sorry buddy. I feel your pain. It's the worst feeling in the world to have someone take something you worked so hard for. Like getting kicked in the balls.

If you passworded your laptop, they wouldn't be able to use it, but they'd probably find a way to get in through the BIOS. Curse Windows and curse the(ose) theif(ives)!!!!

Tell me the model...Asus laptops are rare very rare at McGill.

I also had my laptop stolen when I was in school (college). After the laptop was stolen I went around to all of the libraries on campus during peak study times and I was actually lucky enough to find the laptop and the jerk who stole it. After a lot of hassle I was able to get it back (hopefully you still have receipts, proof of purchase, etc.). I would think that an ASUS laptop is probably not all that common at your school so it should be easy to spot if someone is using it on campus. I wish you the best in getting your laptop back and hopefully the person who stole your laptop is as stupid/lazy as the one who stole mine and you will recover it in the near future.

Bobby, that's a great idea. A McGill student is also more likely to use it than pawn it. Definitely worth a shot.

This is probably a good point to specifically endorse the use of passwords, tracking services, locks, and paranoia.

    Just 'cuz I'm paranoid, ...

if you find the dude its a good practice to play dumb. Come up and ask if he wants to sell it (in a less then obvious fashion). Make him worried see what he says. Easy way to tell if he stole it or not. If he didnt steal it then he bought it. If he told you he had it for a while then he is lying through his teeth and prolly stole it. Only problem is being slick enough to phrase the questions right.

I would also recommend taking pictures of all of your expensive electronics (like laptops), etc. making sure that you get plenty of pics of the serial numbers, etc. This make dealing with the police, insurance companies, etc. much easier. This was actually recommended to me by home owner's insurance (in case of fire, burglary, etc. pictures make it is much easier to remember and prove to the insurance companies what all you had before the tragedy).

Sounds like a lot of people putting some misplaced faith in Windows passwords. They're almost worthless; they'll just keep the honest ones honest. BIOS passwords are a little more useful, but also more likely to make your machine an expensive doorstop if you forget.

    My condolences to the grieving.

Unfortunately bios passwords can be reset by popping out the CMOS battery for few minutes. It is very hard to "protect" your computer (probably pretty much impossible) if someone has the actual machine.

Well, getting a brand new lappy stolen is really uncool... still dont understand why some lame losers do that... heck, get a job get money and buy one yourself!

There are quite a few Universities in Montreal, but if you happen to go to University Of Montreal, wich I do go, I'll be on the checkout for ASUS lappies... Altho I don't know your model, ASUS are very rare around here, so it shouldnt be too hard to find them...

Also, looking in cafeterias during peek hours might be a good idea, as in University Of Montreal, there are Wireless zones in cafeterias (wich does attract more people with laptops than the library)

Finally, I myself getting my first laptop, a Z70Va, I'll be extremely carefull when bringing it to school now.

    hmmm yah :(

Just curious if u do find the person who took it and is using it, DO you have the Right to just walk up and steal it back??

If so well saves the hassel of getting proper authorities =\.

hmm, to answer Mysticgolem's question, I beleive that since technically it's still YOUR computer, taking it back cannot be called "stealing". You cannot steal something that is your own...
But, before taking it back, you better be **** sure that it's yours! otherwise it WILL be stealing...

cool to know it's an A6Va, now I know what to look for around at school! Also, is there any particular signs to it? (ie. scratches, stickers, maybe a name engraved in it?)

Don't know about Canada, but most places possesion is 9/10ths of the law. That is why you should always have a copy of the serial#, or engrave a serial#(identifying mark ie birthdate)on the electronic device. I had a Creative Zen stolen outta my pack by a classmate, but I got it back cause I engraved the last 4 of social security number on the back. Cops saw that and saw my Social security card and said "yep, its yours. Want to press charges" which I didn't do cause I already whipped his ass.

Man, so sorry to hear that, wow. Ya, best thing (in general) don't leave a notebook unattended. I see at my school quite often, but I think various security cameras defer people from stealing. CHECK if there is a security camera placed looking down (or close to - other rooms) the scene of the crime. You never know, you may catch a break.

Here's some advice, first let it go because there's little chance of getting it back because it's gone. Realize that other people lose things of much more value every day. Next file a police report, and post notices on Facebook if you have access. Also watch eBay and Craigslist, and put up fliers around school. Somebody might snitch on this thief of yours for a reward.

i've already done everything suggested in this thread, and more so.

I got to Concordia, but if any Montrealer sees anyone with an A6Va, (there are probably only a dozen on the entire island), let me know or call the police right away.

A reward will be given. (obviously).

Yes if you are talking about desktop PC. Its not that easy with notebooks. Nowadays, the password is kept at a different eeprom chip not on a BIOS chip. Even though you can remove the battery, reset most configurations but the password stored will be persistently there on the chip.

If you set password on the HDD, its even more difficult to get around it. But if the laptop is stolen, it might be in pieces on the eBay! As ASUS laptops are rare in North America and on eBay, you will immediately know who did it.

satch, dude that's horrible! sorry that happened to you. i really don't know how people like these thieves sleep at night! I agree though to keep checking eBay. Find a clevor way to determine the serial number on the notebooks (u know like you want a certain revision cuz the screen is better, or whatever, so u need the last 4 digits or whatever). It's quite likely it would be a local sale.
