I have read in many places that people are suffering from very slow shutdowns (as I was having this problem) as the computer would remain idle for quite a while even after everything was closed before it shut off. and after many reinstalls of vista I found a solution.

I was reinstalling thinking that it was vistas fault and I decided that I would go download the latest ATK software from Asus's website. When they downloaded I ran the program and it asked if I wanted to uninstall the current software (from the disc I got with the laptop), when I did. I restarted my computer and no more long shutdowns. Havent tried to install the latest software yet as I dont want to tempt fate.

Hopefully this will be useful for some people around the forums or those googling the problem.

    Try this:
Access the run command either from the keyboard(windows key then R key)or start/programs/acessories/run
Type regedit in the dialog box, then
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentConrolSet/Control
right click on WaitToKillService, modify the value from 20000 to 5000
    Viola Problem solved

I did do all of that from the tips in the Operating System and it didnt help with that long idleness after all the programs closed, but uninstalling those ATK programs did help
