So you did get a W2 heh.

As for bloatware, the only thing that requires uninstalling is Norton and ASUS LiveUpdate, the rest is your choice, the BT client, Wireless client, BT/WiFi client, are all useful but not necessary.

    1. what can you tell me about the wireless client.. im sure the common question would be do i need it, and would deleting it hinder me from getting onto different wireless connections. and would it render my wireless hotkey useless?

    also...
2.what settings can i tweak on windows for better performance ? how about interenet
    3. what is the most efficient laptop cooler ?
    4. any accessories that are a definite must have for the w2 ?
    5. do the pro's outweigh the con's of overclocking? what are they?

I've had my W2Jb for 10 months now. Like Coriolis said, there's really not alot of bloatware on this rig to begin with. I also disabled some items in msconfig like modem helper and ehtray(?) which caused WMCenter to open every time a disc was inserted. Usual windows system process tweaks can be made by following the many helpful guides available since there is a ton of stuff running in the background that you don't really need.

Also, make sure you convert to NTFS properly by ensuring that your file clusters are set to 4K. The conversion utility will likely end up defaulting you to 512 bytes which will give you a performance hit. I think this is one of the most important steps a new laptop owner can take with their new machine. Read all about the process HERE .

Finally, regarding overclocking. I have played around a bit with boosting my speeds a little but in the end, these computers have some great cards in them that will perform just fine at stock configs. I ran through S.T.A.L.K.E.R. both stock and OC'd. It's not a fire breather but I had most game settings on medium high with very respectable framerates.

Good luck with your new computer. The W2 series really is working art.

I suggest just use the notebook... Is there any particular reason why you want to overclock? I hope you don't mean overclocking the CPU, because 1. it's pointless and 2. it can't be done anyhow.

About the GPU -- just try playing the game and if the performance doesn't satisfy you, then think about overclocking the GPU.

About bloatware and other Windows tweaks... don't just start "tweaking" around without being sure about what you're doing. The basic rule is if you don't know whether you need some tweak or another, then you probably don't need it.

That being said, since it's a Yonah I presume it might come with XP installed, here's my guide on maintaining XP (yeah, also some minor tweaks): http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=81741

Finally, just relax and enjoy your notebook. :)

[I just saw it's MCE, I have no idea what of my guide does apply to MCE and what not... so be wary]

It really depends on the operating system (vista or XP?), and which version of the ATK driver is installed. An updating of the ATK may be required if you want to remove the Intel Wireless Client that comes pre-installed on a XP system. Most people won't need the Intel client, it allows more control and functionality like adhoc networking and WPA encryption stuff, but it's not like the Microsoft can't do, it's just harder to archieve.

For Vista using the Microsoft WLAN Wireless client would work flawlessly and the wireless hotkey works fine with the latest ATKOSD2. Download your Vista drivers here

Nah. Eset NOD32 is the best I've ever used (BT it for version 2.7). Virus updates every day and a very small memory platform (under 20mbs) and scans very fast, within 10-20 mins you'll be done the scan, with others I've seen hours and hours of continuous scanning and completely bogs down the system.

I was using Symantec Antivirus until it gave me some headaches with the update system and then I switched to AVG. I haven't noticed significant slowdowns of the computer so I'm happy with it.

I'm using Sygate Personal Firewall as a firewall. And nothing more than that. Those two should take care that nothing else enters the system. I;m not using IE and I know which sites I visit and which links I click so spyware / adware was never a problem for me. I think anything beyond a lightweight antivirus and firewall has more disadvantages (slowdown) than advantages. At least for me.

E.B.E.: Very nice comprehensive guide. I hadn't seen it before.

i.c.: You have mail with instructions for making a bootable ISO image on CD.
