So I installed windows xp...all good. Red ghosting..bad....but when I pop in the other asus driver instal cd and installed all the drivers..rebooot..then BAM...it's the black screen that tells me this:

Window scould not start because of following file is missing or corrupt:
    system32\Drivers\pci.sys

Then it tells to to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM

But I tried putting it in the cd-rom drive and it doesn't read my windows xp disc! What should I do!!!!!!!??!! HELP!!!

Try another way, press F2 to go to BIOS, to set 1st bootup sequence is cdrom, install a fresh windows. If not choosing repair, just don't format the HD, leave all the file in HD and only reinstall the windows.

I'm shooting in the dark... sort of..... I've seen issues like this in the past and say 8 out of 10 times it's one of the sticks of RAM (or the RAM slot itself)...... If you have two sticks, you can easily take one out and then swap it for the other one..... and then try swapping slots....... it'll take less time then reinstalling windows, which would be fix number two...... Just doing a reinstall without formatting will just search out any files that may have been corrupted and rewrites them..... that can't hurt.

I thought you gonna use the same thread, but i guess you made a new one for it.
Well, for this error, there's not a high chance for RAM actually. I'm no expert, but from over 500+ pc if fix for friends, family, and school this seems to be installation flaw which could cause from scratch disc or improper reading, file transfering from CD-rom to Harddrive. Easiest way to fix is by reinstalling the window. Make sure you set it to boot from CD-rom or else it will boot from HDD since the window is still there, just corrupted. I'm not saying ur CD is bad or the drive is bad. It could be cause just by a spike in electricity. If you want tech detail, i'll post it later. ( just had 3 midterms.. sad and depress :( )

    Here's what you do
    Before you start:
Check to make sure that ur disc is CLEAN. If it has mark on it, try to clean it with glass cleaning cloth. Make sure there's no dust in the CD tray or reading head. Also, If you can, plug the laptop through a UPC or anything that will protect it from power surge.
    1) Start up ur computer and press F2 as soon as the first logo pop up, Centrino logo?
    2) Go to boot sequence.. Usually under "Boot" and make ur CD drive number 1. U could also take the HDD out of boot sequence to make sure it will never boot from there but remember to put it back to normal sequence once you are done with the installation
    3) Install XP
    4) Switch the boot sequence back to normal
    5) Test drive you Laptop.

    Hope that work :)

Thanks for all the feedback. Justin, it couldn't have been the ram since I only have 1 dim in the comp. Thanks anyway! I reinstalled windows and it seems to be working fine now, I think I something must have gone wrong with the initial installation of the asus drivers. Now only if I can get asus to switch me out the red ghost screen!

You're welcome./// as for aphirat --- if you've fixed 500+ systems for family, friends and school....... either you've got a huge family and a ton of friends and a school that has no IT help what-so-ever........ or you're missing out on a huge money maker!

I'm just saying take a look at what could be the obvious first because it's the easiet to rule out...... but really as obvious as it is for me... it's the last thing other people would think of... so it doesn't hurt...... but it looks like he took care of it with a reinstall anyway... all's good.

Bad sectors on your hdd. Not the end of you hdd but certainly can and many times does get worse. Can be the ram too. Only other posible way is the file was altered/deleted. Run the advanced full version scan of you hdd manufacturer scanning soft.

If there's bad sectors.... a full format should take care of that and the drive just won't recognize them and won't try to read or write to them anymore.... so that could work if that's the problem.

Not always. Depends on how many and how bad. May never get through a full format. You can also run defrag which may hang as a result. Only sure fire way is to run manufacturer diagnostics/

If ypu have 500+ systems behind your belt i got an opening for a tech/phone support. its hard to find a good 18year old that will work for 10$ an hour while knowing everything without complaining. :)

Ok well i dont mean to sound like a know it all but i will anyways. This is not how you test your laptop. This geeksquds solution.....reinstall the windows. 500 systems sound like alot. I think you embelished just a tad. With that kind of turnaround you can have your own accounts and start a service company. With that kind of nothc behind your belt you would have given just a tad bit better advice then reinstal the windows. Anyways. Easiest thing is to run the factory certification tests on your hdd and then mem86 v 1.6+ for your ram. If you find nothing wrong then you can resintall the windows. Being able to fix computers is the easiest thing. Being able to accurately troubleshoot them without having the user forfeit their os and files is an art and takes a bit more then just being your local computer guy.

Never mind just read the peosters problem in detail. So it seems that this happen after installing drivers? If this happen after you tried the driver cd that works fine for everyone else i would try a roll back see if maybee you installed something the puter dont like. A bit more detail will help.

Thank you very much for all your input and help. I reformatted the windows and all the drivers seem to instal fine now. But here's a new problem that you guys might be able to help me with :p I was reading the threads on this forum, and came across the ATI catalyst drivers, so I dl and installed it. It wouldn't work though...

It give me a CLI.exe-Application Error:

The application failed intialize properly (0c0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.

And I tried to instal this multiple times with similar results...is there something I am doing wrong?

Ok where are you getting this driver from?. If i can recall correctly its part of the ati catalyst suite? Why are you installing this? Didnt you listen to the above posters?. DO NOT install foreign drivers. USe the included drivers on the cd and ONLY the cd. It has all your drivers. You are causing problems onto your self.

Ah, thanks for the link. That just explains most of the stuff. However, before i say what's wrong i need one last information. "What type of internet connection are you using?" When you download a software, if you use 56K, sometime the software do not download correctly. My first suggestion is uninstalll the one you have. REDOWNLOAD a fresh new one of the software with CLEAN connection. Try not to inturrupt the connection with other type of internet usuage. And make sure when you install, don't run a bunch of programs or defrag ur HDD at the same time.

    Good luck
    Carl
