This would happen the night before projects and homework are due...

Today I updated my graphics driver, MalwareBytes, uninstalled Avira and installed AVG. I restarted after finishing the AVG install, and now I can't boot up. I see the ASUS logo which disappears like normal but then it's just a black screen with my cursor and the loading wheel/circle/thing.

I tried rebooting a couple times, letting the circle spin for a few hours, draining power + reinserting the battery, pressing windows key + B while powering up, pressing F2, F5....

I can't get past the loading circle. Help!

I don't know anything about my laptop, I bought it in 2014. It's a custom Asus n56jr-eh71, runs windows 8, and according to the stickers has Intel Core i7 and Nvidia GeForce GTX 760M.

Please help. My homework and project files are on this thing

The HDD is probably fine but the GPU may be going bad.

If you can still access the bios menu then set graphics to iGPU only. Would think that graphics driver update is to blame, though safe mode would prevent the driver from starting ... except if you had Fast Boot enabled (which is always a terrible idea); F8/safe mode will not be available then. It can also prevent you from accessing the bios menu on some systems, another reason to disable that nasty option. Removing the OS drive should at least make the bios accessible and also permit booting from another drive, USB stick and, hence, re-installing the OS (losing the data on the OS partition, of course)..

Another thing to try is a cmos reset. The steps you have taken so far will not have accomplished that. Remove DC cable, normal battery and the cmos battery, then press and keep power button for 10-20 seconds and the bios will have reset to default values and you should be able to access the bios menu again. The cmos battery is somewhere on the motherboard and with your system it'll take removing only the keyboard (easy) or also the top cover, which is a bit of a pain on most laptops.

Maybe you can also get lucky by simply attaching a monitor the system and the boot up. Not much hope there, but it is easy ...

Accessing the data outside the OS may be difficult since Fast Boot will lock the drive. If you had the data on a separate drive then there's no problem; swap it to a different system and you're good.
