right now im using a spire pacific cooler but dont think it works well with g1 because the vent is on the back. is it bad for the laptop to have air blowing back into the vent? any idea which cooler i should get?

... why create 2 threads about it
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=114798

wait patiently and u'll get answers eventually, people here most usually respond immediately when they see there's something they can help. but sometimes it takes like half a day to a day until someone who knows something about it to come across a problem they can help solve

anyways, i'm using the zalman laptop cooler and it's working wonders.

Here's how you determine whether your notebook cooler is doing its job.

Download a program to monitor your temperatures, NHC, Everest, Speedfan and anything else you can think of.

Then do the following tests. Run the notebook with out the cooler and run it on battery, doing normal tasks, then record temps.
Then plug in the laptop and play a movie and then record the temps.
Lastly, play a game and record temps.

Then run teh same 3 tests with the notebook cooler, and see and compare the temps to whether they made a difference.

The fact that the vent is in the back is not what causes a difference. It is a matter of how the notebook is designed to cool and where the vents are place and how it sits on the notebook cooler.

If for some reason your notebook cooler doesn't satisfy you, you will want to check this:

Read through them, do some additional digging for information and reviews.

What I found most annoying about laptop coolers is that if you have any holes beneath your laptop (whether that be for a subwoofer, vent, or any other type of slot) the cooler will inevitably lead to a build-up of dust. You can't simply use a dust-buster to blow it away as you'd blow the dust into the laptop. So I would make sure there's no such places beneath your laptop where dust can accrue and if there are such places, see that these places are easily accessible/cleaned before you use a cooler regularly.

i didnt mean to make 2 threads i just posted it in the wrong location. right now my cooler is sucking air from top and blowing it to the bottom of the laptop. and the main vent is not getting any air or receiving and help form the coolers.

I was looking for the cooler for my G1 also. I found many of them are too small due to G1 housing design is not true wide screen. Meaning, it's little too deep. The G1 didn't produce too much heat. I am looking for a cooler/sturdy platform on my lap. I just got this Zalman today. It's almost as wide as the G1, but fits the feet perfectly and the depth is right on. I like the Zalman, it's beautifully made and rigid with thick aluminum. I am not saying I am recommending this one, I am just saying this is the one I got.

eh?! u sure the air's being sucked from the back and not from the bottom? mine is the other way around... and shouldn't it be the same for all g1's, at least?

ya the heat can be felt at the back cuz that's where the air is being blown out? the air is sucked from the bottomw fan, blown out at the back.

hence i think the zalman i'm using is perfect. the way the cooler sucks air itself and distribute it around also in my opinion reduces the dust that is being sucked up by the laptop. 2 birds with 1 stone, imo.

This is what I use with my F3JP:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834998051

It works very well it keeps the laptop about 3C colder at idle and 5-6C colder when playing games! This cooler blows air up from under the cooler and the aluminum that it is made out of cools the air on its way to the laptop. Highly Recommended!

They make it in Black and Silver
