Just saw this when i went to Gentech's site, i also saw it on the excaliburpc site.
http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=G71G-A2&Category_Code=AS17
It looks to be the new North American version of the G71, which is great. But I haven't heard of the 9800M GS. Almost seems like it's a typo and should be the 9800M GTS. Actually, it says 9800M GT at the bottom of the excalibur site.
Here is what the excalibur site said:
http://www.excaliberpc.com/588894/asus-g71g-a2-17-notebook.html
ETA: 1st or 2nd week of November, 2008. New Intel Montevina Platform + 6GB "DDR3 1333/PC3-10666" Memory + NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS 512MB DDR3 Graphics Card + Two (2) x 320GB "7200RPM" Hard Drive + "Blu-Ray Disc Drive".
-Everything about this is perfect for me, since it will be available in Canada. I've recently been pretty sad because i was looking at getting an OCZ whitebook from xoticpc but the Canadian dollar has dropped so low that with tax and everything it would cost me $1000 more to buy a $2500 laptop from xoticpc.
-
9800m gs looks right as that is what the new version of of the G50 will have. For the price that is a nice laptop.
-
this looks SWEET! 6GB RAM = nice. if the pricepoint holds at around 2G, it will be an excellent choice!
-
It better be the same or in the middle, i don't see why Asus would put another medium performing graphics card in their gaming notebooks like they did with the 9700 in the G50. -
I just saw another thread on here that has people saying the 9800M GS is a downclocked 9800M GTS.
According to Ken at Gentech, Asus said the GTS did not pass their thermal test. That is why they chose the 9800M GS.
Hopefully they offer something to overclock the video card like they did with the G50, so we can bring it up to the level of a 9800M GTS. -
This will describe why is it call 9800M GS:
http://xtreview.com/addcomment-id-4797-view-GeForce-9M-Series-Gpu-list.html -
man its going to be hard to pick between this and the new g50. I like them both
-
How much is the new G50? Isn't the only difference the size of the screen?
-
It think so. Should not be to much more for the 17in version. I was looking at getting the 15in but for 2k you get alot of computer for that price. I just looking to see the size to see how much bigger it is.
-
Wow, 6GB RAM. Thats pretty friggin sweet. Really high specs all around, though I'd be hard pressed to take this over a G50Vt with the same GPU.
-
do you all think at 17in laptop is that much bigger then the g50 is now?
-
I really really wanted the 9800m gtx but they said they had thermal issues. maybe someone will figure out how to upgrade it and make it work. well anyway, Gentech said the ship date is November 14. Cant wait so I might buy the new g50 from best buy then return it before the 30 days or when I get the g71 lol.
-
I was thinking of doing the same thing, but the 15% restocking fee doesn't look too great
-
man, I forgot about the restocking fee. That would be 186.00 down the drain. Looks like I will be waiting.
-
man I like this notebook. But i need it before Nov 22 as I fly out. I wonder if the free shipping will make it in time or if we will be able to pre order the new g50. man this is hard
-
If you order it now you should get it by Nov 22. I heard that they will be available 2nd week of November.
-
Nice laptop for the price.
GenTechPC is look like the M70VM-C1 lost again this one components/price. -
I hope it comes in that black and silver color scheme like that Best Buy G50vt model, instead of the red.
-
Those are some amazing specs!

Blue-Ray, better screen, 6GB of 1333MHz RAM, definately worth the $400 more.
-
SLi or bust.
-
Can this take a X9100 CPU?
-
Roland@XoticPC Company Representative
The X9100 CPU is one of the processor options listed in the Asus Specification sheet on Asus's website. Asus hasn't publicly announced any other possible models besides the G71G-A1 & A2 which has the T9400 as the base processor.

First of all, I love the G71g. But the 6 gb is barely ever useful for gamers. What do you guys think? I mean, I don't mind the 6 gb, but i see it more as a market number than anything else.
BlueRay is nice, I don't mind having it. Again, it's not necessary for me, as I don't connect it to HDTV to see the difference of DVD and BR. Some people can see the difference in a 17" LCD, but i can hardly see the difference.
17" is necessary for me, so I can't buy the G50. -
How is it upgradeable in terms of GPU?
-
It's probably just as difficult (or maybe impossible) to upgrade the GPU, as on most other laptops.
-
last year John Woo's Stranglehold came out (and mind you it was a straight port to PC, and probably not very efficient that way) and the *minimum* requirements was 2GB or RAM. flipped out at that, as although it's a kick-*** game, it was basically Max Payne 2 on serious steroids. -
I don't see any game need more than 3 gb in near future. even with vista.
-
Depends what you mean by near future.
-
Sorry guys, I need to break the news for you guys.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
Updated chart with 9800m GS spec. SAD. It is barely better than 9700m GTS, slower clocked of 9800m GTS. -
I wonder if the 9800m GS in the new models can be overclocked?
-
Great News for me this is an awesome card on a 15 inch laptop. I ordered last week, it might ship early next week.
-
-
My problem is I just order my x300 from BB Canada for $1599 with 9700m GTS. If the 9800m GS is only about 5% better than 9700m GTS, then I would settle with my x300. Because I suspect the G71g will cost upwards of $2400 in Canada. That's 800 dollars difference to compensate for sheetty build quality, LCD, CPU, warranty, and service of toshiba.
Is it worth it? -
im not sure if this is bad news. Most have said that it will only be better then a 9700gts. I mind it. I did not think Asus was going to put in a very top of the line card when the old card was not the top of the line also.
-
any updates on this notebook?
Does ASUS usually implement the specs that state and meet their committment date? -
-
agh.
Well, I'll say it again: the 9800M GS is a bit above 9700M GTS, and a far bit below 9800M GTS.
I think it should be called 9700M GTX, or 9700M GT+ -
According to the same site notebookcheck.net
Performance in Crysis 1280x1024 in fps
9700 GT 12.53
9700 GTS 15.61
9800 GTS 20.33
9800 GT 21.53
9800 GTX 22.38
To me, the difference between the 9800 series is minimal and almost negligible. I expect the 9800 GS would get about 18.5-19.5 perhaps more because it has the same number of shaders as the GTS but I could be wrong.
Even if it isnt in that range, I would be happy with it... -
if you just look at the http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html it says it has more shaders than the 9700.
In fact it looks like the same thing as 9800m GTS except stock clocks are
570/800/1325 (I saw the shader clock elsewhere) vs 600/800/1500 for the GTS. All this makes me wonder if the GS are 'reject' GTS. But if the GS will overclock as well % as the GTS then it will be pretty good. It obviously deserves to be called 9800 due to shader count, etc. I dont know wth they
had to make yet another. wierd thing is that nvidia shows 'gigaflops' on the GS as 254 vs 240 for the GTS, making them higher on the GS! But I dont know what gigaflops do for you and what they mean to framerates for various games.. Does anyone know this? ( i kinda doubt this means GS can totally keep up with GTS)
also looks like GS is 55nm process vs 65 for the GTS (512mb vers) so GS may use a little less power and heat. -
Gigaflop... no idea...
I believe that many laptop producers are using the GS because the others didnt pass the thermal requirements... I wouldnt be surprised at all if the GS could be overclocked to the level a GTS or even high than its stock clock just keep in mind that the thermal issue but I think if you go get a notebook cooler you will be fine... -
I am hopefully grabbing my G50Vt-A1 tomorrow with the 9800M GS in it and I'll be able to shed a little light on whats going on with the overclock ability of this card. I hope I can get it to GTS speeds!

My pre-ordered Asus G71g-a2 has finally shipped from Gentechpc. I should get it on the 25th. This is my first laptop so I will give yall my noobish opinion of it. Also in the invoice they wrote "Actual unit came with DDR2 800 not DDR3 1333. Sorry for the incomvenience". I am not sure if that makes a big difference, does it? I was thinking of doing an box opening on youtube, but I hesitate because of my lack tech knowlengde.

There is no major performance difference between DDR2 and DDR3 memory. You can view benchmark reports for the comparison of DDR2 versus DDR3 memory here

What processor would be stronger for gaming:
A Q9000 or a T9500 -
Roland@XoticPC Company Representative
The dual core T9500 would be better for gaming.
-
Does this laptop come with the four speakers and subwoofer? I keep reading conflicting things. On xotic pc it says it does but on these forums people say it doesn't.
Also would you guys get this comp or the msi gt725? -
