There will be a refresh for the G50 series. It'll most likely be an upgrade to the GTX 260M and probably the keyboard as well.

Refresh to a GTX260M? Ohman. How user-replaceable is a 9800m GS? I know it has an inverted MXM III slot or something.

It shouldn't be hard to replace the GPU, but finding one for sale will be the challenge as Asus won't be selling the part.

I'm guessing it will be in the same/similar range as the current G50Vt prices, however I don't think Asus has set the MSRP yet.

Any idea of the date? I was thinking of buying the current $1500 Amazon X2A model, but if the new ones are not too far off, I can definitely wait.

That's Asus' plan.... a 260M on the new G50 series, however there is a very slight chance it may be the 130M since the VX5 (which is essentially a G50 chassis) has the 130M

I remember hearing about sometime in the summer. Probably mid-late summer I guess, since that's the best time to cash in on the back-to-school crowd.

Isnt the 130m less powerful than the 9800m gs? a gts = a 170m so basically it would than be just as strong as the present models

Yeah, the 130M would be a step down from the 9800M GS.

9800m GS is between 150m and 160m. The 130m is about 9650m GT level

If it was a 130M wouldn't Asus just be shooting themselves in the foot?
Hope its a 260M, and I hope I can find one for sale somewhere!

How good is GTX 260M as compared to 9800M GS ?
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that the difference could only be seen at a higher resolution.

Does anyone know about the date when Asus is launching the revised version of G50VT ?

    Thanks in advance.

From what I read, not knowledge lol, the 260m is equal to a 9800m gtx so it is double the performance of a 9800m gts. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

We need to find out if it has the same cooling features as the g50vt series and same voltage output.

Hopefully it's coming out soon at the same price as G50VT

The only problems i can think that the G51 may have is GPU heat and battery life.

I'd be a little more worried about the battery life of a G51, but I wouldn't mind a little more laptop thickness if they put a 9 cell or 12 cell battery in there.

Btw, for those who have any G50, how is your battery life on average?

I should slap you so hard, so so very hard. AT idle my T9600 is actually 10 degree's cooler than the P7450 partially due to the T9600 having a larger thermal interface to cover the larger die (from the extra cache).

With the thermal max of 105C im sure the processor will survive just fine on the stock cooling. If you feel the voltage is too high undervolt it but the G50's are available with T9550's which are 35 watt same as the T9800. I cant image the T9900 will be unmanageable.

Yeah it does, though if myne was white it would be very easy to lay vinyl designs on it. Much harder to add a cool design to the X5.

    Whoa wait a minute.

    Look at these specs:
    * Processor & Cache Memory:
    o Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9100/ Q9000, 2.26-2 GHz
    o Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T9900/ T9800/ T9600/ P9600/ T9550/ P9500/ T9400/ P8800/ P8700/ P8600/ P8400/ P7450/ T6600/ T6400, 3.06-2 GHz
    * Chipset : Intel PM45 + ICH9M

This means we have a socket P motherboard with Quadcore support, with the same northbridge and southbridge as the existing G50vt's.

IN THEORY: Could we (the existing G50vt owners) just flash our BIOS to the G51 bios and have quadcore support? Hehey?

Yes it should work in theory. Someone on this forum tried a quad core extreme and got it too boot up but never into the os. A g51 bios could make it happen if we can find it.

Ok, so this means nothing to us G50Vt owners. I mean who would dish out something around $400-600 on a Geforce GTX 260M (ASUS limited version only) + another $300 on a Intel Core 2 Quad Processor while at the end it'll add up around the same price as a new laptop anyhow? I mean sure it's good to know there's room for upgrade when the laptop sees some age, but makes it seem like a complete waste to have invested on a G50Vt just to replace all the key components.

I myself would love to put a quad core and a 260m into my x5...Yes it would be close to the same price as a new g51 might be but why scrap what you have now? Just upgrade it....This is how the laptop modding world is. The fact that your g50 is upgradeable should make you happy itself.

Or you can sell your G50Vt and buy a new G51. (with money received through sale + money that would have been wasted on G50vt upgrades)

Yea try selling it when the g51 comes out. I'd rather buy the cpu and gpu, cpu for now since the 9800m gts is plenty and more.

I don't know really, I haven't found any more info on the G51 or G51VX (which is the only model on the ASUS support page, no A1 or A2... yet). The G50V came out around July of last year so I agree with what David posted a few pages back:

backlit keyboard, LED screen (hopefully the HD means 1920x1080), T9900 AND a gtx260m... if thats the case, i may have to skip the K51 (if it ever comes out).

Most G50vt users would not get much gaming benefit from more than an OCed P8400 anyway, so a CPU upgrade doesn't make a lot of sense right now. Quad-core is nice, but unless you're benchmarking and encoding video for a living, it's not really necessary or terribly beneficial.

If the 260 uses the same interface as the G50's 9800M GS that would be exciting though.
