due to cost changes of 1gb 667 sticks, the newest v6j shipment came in with 2 x 512mb 667. I don't know if or how this affected the W3j and W2j shipment, but that's sort of out of my control until they come in, but the V6j shipment from last week was just checked out and it does indeed have a dual channel set up. That will interest some and piss off others...... but it is still 667. I got a PM from someone earlier asking if the 2 x 512mb 533 rumor was true.... that's half right..... it's still 667... I confirmed this myself after our guys checked out one of the new systems to verify configuration.

Any way you can check w/ your contact at Asus to see how the W3js shipped?
-
so its possible that the W3j's will have 2 x 512mb?

I spoke to soon........ W3j's now have 2 x 512mb....... Throwing the "confirmed" page back at Asus and all they can say is that's how it goes.... Anyone who needs to cancel because it's 2 x 512mb is fully free to do so, but you need to email me directly asap. I can't do anything about this and I can't use the words that I just did on the phone with Asus... .but apparently all of you weren't crossing those fingers like I asked...

I don't want to cancel my order canceled, but can i just return the 1 gig stick when it arrives.
-
PROPortable Company Representative
email me..... we're not going to waste our time shipping out the stick if you don't want.
-
disregard my last post. i'll just purchase another 1 gig stick, so that i can run 2gb dual channel.

I don't change people's orders based on their forum posts anyway........ but regardless, you bring up a good point which some others may want to do as well..... but if you want to, just email me.

I edited the title of the thread to make it more relevant

Not great news, but not that big a deal. Figure this is karma after they upgraded CPU but lowered price; something had to give.
Now that it looks more like the Euro configuration, will the US W3Js also feature slower HDDs? I think the Euros were getting 4200rpm, not 5400rpm. I hope not!!! -

Poopy! *stamps foot*

Really bites that I was planning on going w/ 2x1GB within a month or so of getting it...oh man.
-
I just ordered a V6J and that's coming with 2x512MB as well. I'm going to stick with it though since currently I don't need more than 1GB and dual channel will be better than having a single 1GB stick.
-
If I look at it like this -I wasn't going to upgrade the RAM immediately, and it's not like the actual amount of RAM when down...it actually has it's benefits...etc...etc.
Plus RAM prices are only going down... -

Can someone explain the benefits of two sticks (I have the orignal V6j configuration, aside from more memory, what is the benefit of adding another gig of RAM)?
-
PROPortable Company Representative
two same size and speed sticks enables dual channel memory access..... benchmarking honestly, hardly picks up the performance gains.
having an open slot means you can upgrade without having to replace a stick and at that point you could enable dual channel.....
There are a half dozens reasons for one way and for the other..... -

The biggest downside is that a person now has to purchase 2x 1gb sticks instead of just 1x 1gb stick. And has to open the keyboard slot.
This change only affects aftermarket user costs and extra work for the keyboard slot.
The gains, many of us will not upgrade from 1gb to 2 gb anyways.
You get the benefit of Dual Channel Right away.
And i side benefit is ASUS decreased it's costs for producing the W3J by roughly $5-10, and allows them to make more money. They did bump up the cpu speed from 1.6 to 1.8ghz
Thanks,

(suppose I should clarify 6 fps going from 96 fps to like 102 fps)
I don't know the whole story as to why Intel would push such a configuration. I'm sure someone else more in the know could tell you.
I do remember reading that you have to take off the keyboard to get access to one of the RAM sticks. If so, that sounds like fun.
It might not be that bad though. -
I believe the 1GB in the first config was going to come on the underside anyway - we'd have to go digging either way.

Can anyone provide a link or more of a technical explination of what that means or something more along those lines. I am just curious about things like that. Thanks.

Here's an assembly sheet with pictures and instructions on how to install upgrades such as HD, RAM, and CPU for the W3N, which should be the exact same as the W3J, however only Justin can confirm this. Here's the link:

I don't think that's true Undertow, they normally leave the bottom slot empty for us, but that's irrelevant now anyways!!!
I think It really sucks, seeing as I already bought a 1GB stick in anticipation of the W3J's arrival...but what can you do??? If I were Justin I'd be more than pissed with Asus for confirming something like that and then changing it this late in the game, that's the biggest injustice of it all. I feel bad for Justin, but If Asus loses some sales over this then I hope it teaches them a lesson (not likely).
Like I said in another post, until the box is in your hands or the retailers, I wouldn't be surprised if something differed from what was expected.
I can understand people being upset and angry, but not to the point of cancelling their orders...what's that going to do? If you've done your research and you were that gung-ho to pre-order, than something like this shouldn't have affected your $2000 decision...like Justin said, It's not like you're going to be able to get it spec'd any differently or any cheaper anywhere else in North America. If a W3J is your all around perfect/dream machine, then suck it up and deal with it...I have and I already bought and paid for my 1GB stick -

Wow, I shouldn't talk on the phone and post online at the same time, I just read my last post and realized it didn't make much sense. I mean can someone give a technical explination (or post to one) of what the dual channel means and how it all works? Thanks.
-
yeah today i just bought another 1gb corsair valuselect stick so that i can make use of the one i purchased with the W3J. After all the changes, I'm still getting 2gb of ram. Also cancelling a preorder just because of a configuration change in the ram is nonsense. I mean you're still getting 1gb of ram. Plus we got a processor upgrade as well as a dvd burner upgrade.

Caleb,
I think i found what you were looking for.

That link doesn't work.
It's pretty straight forward, there's two RAM slots on the W3 chasis, one is underneath the keyboard in a slot/socket, and the other is on the bottom of the chasis/laptop under a small cover with screws. The slot on the bottom of the laptop is very accessible and changing the RAM in there is almost exactly like changing the battery's in your TV remote control/converter. The other slot, under the keyboard is more complicated because you have to remove the keyboard itself to get to it...like other's have said, the keyboard is held in place by 4 clips, you have to depress those to pop out the keyboard, at which point you'd be able to locate the RAM slot, change or install the RAM and then you'd have to put the keyboard back on to finish the process...so where one is quite accessible and VERY routine, the other requires more effort, delicacy and know-how. If he gets that link working, then you'll be able to see where the clips are located in the keyboard, exactly where the RAM goes under there and other visual cues that will make what I've written much clearer and easier to attempt. I Hope that helps a little and didn't confuse you even further -

Let me ask this...will dual channel still work if say, you added just ONE 1GB chips - bringing the total to 1.5GB? Or does it have to be equal memory in each slot?
-
The sticks have to be identical in order to run dual channel.

...(trys to stop laughing)...that reminds me of the joke where a woman (or man for that matter) is told to give her dog 1 pill twice a day. She then asks the vet, "How do give the dog the same pill, twice a day?"
How do I put the same stick stick in a computer in two seperate slots?
Just kidding around, everyone around me is in a bad mood...need to smile. -
hahaha....>_>
killerjay_47: your signature says you pre-ordered from canadasys. how do you do that for the w3j? i see no such link anywhere. -
