first i wanted to say thanks to everyone on this forum for all the useful info. i ended up with a v6j with 2ghz merom, 2gbram and 100gb 7200rpm hd

i know this model is discontinued but there are still some for sale and hopefully some others may still be considering buying it becuase its a really nice laptop

i wanted to point out some things that i have not seen mentioned anywhere yet:

    PROS..........................
-aluminum palmrest looks like it will show no signs of palm wear. i peeled off the stickers with no problem, cleaned it with alcohol with no problem. i have gotten myself into many a situation trying to peel stickers off of plastic

    - it fits a 14inch shinza zeroshockIII like a glove although it is a 15inch notebook

-with the battery out, part of the cloth that came with the computer that is used to protect the screen from the keyboard may be accessed. it is obvious that the cloth is loose in there when the lid is closed over the cloth which tells me that theres alot of room between the screen and keyboard. the lid is also super sturdy. i have a radtech screen cloth anyway becuase i like the extra piece of mind... plus i use it to wipe the screen alot.

-i have an external notebook hardrive adaptor which has two possible usb connections: one for power [if sufficient] and data, the other is for power only if the laptop cant supply enough power to the one usb port. my desktop only requires one usb connection for transfer and power. a dell latop of a friend couldnt handle it so i needed both connections. the v6j provides enough to make only one connection necessary which is nice.

-the palmrest gets warm but not uncomfortable. the bottom doesnt get uncomfortably warm either

-geared2play gave me a little micro phillips screwdriver tool

-guys at geared2play are great.. i had a great buying experience there. this is one of two notebooks i purchased from them and their service has been excellent every time.

    CONS...........................
-the built in microphone is right on top of the fan so it gets alot of fan noise

-the microphone jack is extremely close to one of the usb ports, so both ports are not accessable at the same time

-the aluminum palmrest is attached to both speaker and built in microphone so its more prone to feedback under the condition that both are being used.

my gf has a z63a that i built for her which i absolutely love. the v6j is bigger and significantly thinner, similar in weight when the z63a has its cdrom drive removed. i just with that the v6j has a dummy cdrom tray so that i could take out the cd drive since i hardly use it. a nice asus bag and wireless mouse would have been nice to have too.

besides the small issues which do not bother me at all, its a great laptop. super fast, looks really durable, and is relatively light and thin for its size.

Ye i am sorry to see the v6j go. Without a doubt this was asus best designed notebook. The slow sales for it can only be explained by the non wide screen. I just dont get why they cant make it a 15.4" or a 14" same thickness and aesthetics. Poor management i guess.

Yeap, the V6 is probably my favourite model, behind the W2 and the W5.

I absolutely love my V6j. I was just with a bunch of friends, every one of them had some problem with their laptop, which they just kinda shrugged off, and I used to have them too, but not with the V6j.

I cant sift through the threads but i recall saying that the v6j was discontinued and justin contradicted me.

But it turns out I was correct then? The asus estore called it discontinued.

Most likely the real reason is lcd availability.

No major lcd maker has a 15 inch lcd for sale. The 15 inch standard ratio notebook is gone.

They discontinued it to continue the Vx series which looks liek that will not last either becuase it is even more expensive due to a fancy shmancy lid and a 160gb drive? Bad management....

I love and hate my V6J, like in the romantic-era poems :)

I love it because it's the most beautiful notebook from the brand that makes the most beautiful notebooks (ASUS...)

I love it because it's works smooth & fast...

I love it because it's so thin and light.

I hate it because of the recurring battery problems... I've changed 3 batteries until now and had weeks of downtime, and the problem is still there... and I think it's from the ACPI firmware, and I hate that ASUS is doing nothing to investigate & fix the issue.

I hate it because in this weekend I found out that the DVD writer is badly calibrated from the firmware and therefore can't write DVD+/-RWs...

E.B.E., I am in the same exact boat as you. I will post this info in the battery wear thread, but I am going to have my battery replaced.

    i 3rd you to

and I actually dislike widescreen, maybe it was the resolution or something it just doesn't appeal to me, and wow i must say the V6j is one of the slickest looking laptop ever built + love that carbon fiber i wish it was the Entire laptop but then that might burn me heh,
something i dislike and like is the 7400 in there: it is quite the powerful gpu butttttt i wish i had more!
Oh and the battery problem, I'm already about to replace my 2nd battery geez.

GeForce is reasonable enough for me. I can play Hitman Blood Money w/ high quality graphics in 1024x768. :) [Not in the native res though].

Do you also have issues with DVD+/-RWs?

I am going to call for my battery in 30 min, but I have no problems with the DVD drive at all. I find the GPU to be enough, I can play FEAR, and it runs just fine for everything else.

actually, from one of the headlines posted by either Chaz or Abaxter, Lenovo was going to drop the Z series but will make a "widescreen" T series. sounds a bit confusing no?

Hmm... excuse me? I cannot accept such a reasoning on their side. I paid money for a fully-functioning computer and I will not accept that "the issue cannot be fixed". If it cannot be fixed, we(owners of V6J with battery problems) are all entitled to a refund.

Edit, to clarify: Seb, I'm not trying to be offensive to you. :) It's just annoying, the fact that I feel that somehow ASUS is trying to shrug this problem off.

Mine has gotten better though, the bluetooth doesn't have to be on for wireless any more, and its isn't always on when I turn the computer on, still seems like it needs to be fixed, though.

I've noticed that the wireless stuff only happens for some networks (i.e. BT on required for WiFi connect). For others, WiFi on is enough.
