it seems someone has taken the plunge and purchased ram beyond the manufacturers specs on the asus forums. and if you know me around here, you probably know i've been up everyone's arse lately looking for a concrete answer, and it looks like i pretty much have one now. So if anyone else was in the same boat as me I come bearing good news.

this was the main reason i bought the g71 over say a clevo or msi, because of the allure of 12 gigs of ram (ddr2 still, but i'd take 12 gigs of ddr2 over 8 of ddr3 for more money)

So how is he getting 12gb?

Why do you or this guy want to put 12 gb of ram in a laptop? The only reason you would need 12 gb is if you were running a server or doing some serious, and completely unrealistic multitasking. No game or program I know of needs even 6 gb of ram, so 12 gb is just a waste of money. Or do you guys know something I dont?
