I picked up a g51 on ebay that was supposed to just need a new screen and a hard drive installed. I swapped screens from a g50v and put in a new hard drive to get it going. The power and top button light up but the display does nothing :( Does this mean the 260m is bad or that the motherboard is bad.

Does the computer power on with nothing happening? If this happens, press the power button, if the computer turns off the second you touch the botton, then your motherboard is bad. If it doesnt power off right away, then your GPU is bad.

I have to hold the power button like I would normally for it to shut off manually. If I just press it, it stays on. I did try swapping the 9700m out of my g50v into it before swapping screens and I could get the keyboard to light up and the boot sound to go off so I am guessing this is actually a bad gpu :(

On a side note has anyone tried the oven trick on gpu's to get them working again?

Do you get the windows flash or the boot flash at all? If not, but you hear sounds and stuff, your screen might have went bad. If your tech saavy, you could take it apart and make sure the screen connector into the board is securely in place and seated properly.

The screen was busted (this was supposed to be the only issue with the laptop). I will double check when I get the new screen in, I was just seeing if I need to replace the gpu as well though :(

Has there been any reported issues with the 260m's failing since they came out?

not to my knowledge, atleast not reported on here, which g51 do you have... the G51J? If so, that model is only 3 months old... Barely enough time for the paint to dry...

not 100 percent sure since it was missing the panel with that info on it. It is the one with the white backing and such. It had the lower resolution screen so I am guessing it is one of the earlier 51vx's

That sounds like a G51vx-RX05 -- the best buy version. I have that version also. If you don't mind me asking how much did you end up having to pay for the broken G51? Those aren't very expensive anymore, and you can find used ones on ebay that are in working condition for like 700$ or less. Or get the new version of the G51 at BB new for like 899$

paid like 250 for it, I was either going to fix it or use the 260m in the g50v. I enjoy tinkering on things like this since my g50v works fine but it would be nice to get the g51 working. I should have a new screen this week but I would think that I would at least get backlighting on the g51 when I turn it on :(
