Hi, I really wanted to get a barebone z63a (and put in the components) because this way I get a quality laptop and good price (compared to like IBM or sony or something)
but the problem is ALL of the z63a models i've come across has glare type screen...
I don't want that because I'm going to use the laptop mainly for programming, and staring at a highly reflective screen for a long time reading text is just going to be hard on the eyes.
was wondering if there are any solutions? perhaps a 14 inch asus model without glare type screen?
thanks.

Not sure about 14", but the Z70va (15.4") has a matte screen. Problem there is it's a WSXGA+ resolution, which might make the text to small to be reading for long periods of time.
What ever you go with, adjusting the brightness of the monitor will help with the eyes too. -

The Z63a is a specific model and all it has is a glaretype display... so all the looking in the world isn't going to change that.
If you want a 14" with matte type display.... and looking at an Asus... all you're really got is the Z61 (14" XGA regular ratio)...... The Z61 is part of the M3 model line and was THE prototype centrino notebook Asus developed with Intel to show other companies what Centrino would be all about........ It's a notebook with history and it's a great notebook....... but all the matte type display models are aging... -
thanks for replies.
proportable, what do you mean when you say "all matte screens models are aging" ?
do you mean more and more screens are glare typed and NOT matte? i don't get it, don't people always need the matte screen if the laptop is going to be used for business/wordprocessing (ibm for example, all non-glares) -
I don't seem to have a problem with it especially since i only turn the brightness half way or maybe im just used to my 19" glossy nec lcd
perhaps you can grab one of those anti-glare transparent sheets but i dunno how well those work -

Few were used last year and it looks like only some of the budget systems will use them this year.
.... and no, glaretype screens have a bad rap because of some really bad screens that cheap companies use...... everyone for years and years used CRT tubes in offices and a glaretype display basically has the same properties...... a lot of people still like the matte type displays, but it's mainly because of the stigma.... although few people actually sit say right below a highoutput light which if in the right spot could cause problems.... but it's really an issue of the backlight...... if you can match your ambient light with the brightness of the screen - you don't get that reflection that older glaretypes had......... I've said it before, they work like two-way mirrors and the new screens with higher brightness are designed to counteract that reflection.
But right now...... the Z61 is basically your only choice in the Asus lineup........ but for your information.... the "business users" still prefer regular ratio as well.. that's why the Z61 is regular ratio and it's why the old V6v was as well..... but that's even changing over now. -
^ ya that and once you get used to it, you'll really only notice the reflection when viewing large patches of black like in windows media... god i love the crispness. sorry about not giving u alternatives but instead trying to convert you

All I can say on the subject is that I used my W3 out on the water this summer..... I made many posts on the forum while all I could see was water and glare...... yet I could still see my screen enough to get the job done (I couldn't work all day like that... but I could read the forums and see what I was typing)..... yet my brother's W1 totally washed out to the point you couldn't see ANYTHING on the screen and it looked as though it was off......... and the W1's screen (which is now also on the Z70va) is THE best matte type display out there...... so although it's "reflective".. it has a higher brightness to counteract it as best it can.. at least better than the matte displays..... and an overhead light is no match for 2pm July sun in the middle of a lake.

haha, i actually WANT to be converted, eric.
this asus is just too **** sexy and good of a value to pass by (except for the screen ofcourse)
@proportable: I agree wholeheartedly with what you said about outdoor usage; however, i will only be using this laptop in the library/classroom/dorm room. WOULD you be able to work all day long on the z63a screen in a library? please be honest with me, thx.
thx. -
i do a lot of studying at school study areas and library with my laptop on and it has not bothered me at all considering most of these areas have higher ceilings so the light is not intense and direct which. i feel very comfortable being about 2 feet from the screen and having brightness at about 75%. in fact, i bought this laptop especially for the screen.
only eye strain problem i can think of is if you stare at a lot of white on the screen for a long time eg. this forum -
I'm kinda worried about the glossy screen to. I have every intention of buying a W3J, but bright screens really hurt my eyes. I rarely run my old Toshiba (matte screen) at anything above the lowest brightness setting (in most classrooms, though, the lighting makes the screen somewhat brighter). Can anyone make a comparison in brightness between a glossy screen and a matte one? I've never actually used a glossy screen for long, so I don't have a solid opinion on them.
-
oh noes
I will be using the lappy to program and word process a LOT (both staring at white screen for long time)
=( -
I use both matte and glossy. I can stare at a glossy screen for 8 hours straight no issues at all. It is no different in comfort than a matte screen i dont understand why people think its so different. its like looking at a CRT screen since when does that bother anyone.

If you don't like white, there's a way to reset your default colors. I didn't do it intentionally, but the theme I run on my desktop resets the default white to a nice grey, which I find much easier on my eyes.
non glare screen asus?
