sound output, yeah you CANT HEAR IT! Yes even the stupid bios setting is set to 8(why is that in the bios what problem did this solve?) I can even have it cranked with my headphones on I can hear everything going on around me WITH HEADPHONES! oh well I guess I had to find something wrong. what is soooooooooooooo hot about EAX if you have to hook up a soundsystem to hear it? my x83's sound blows this away.

Most new laptops are like that lately. Doesn't make sense to me either. My previous Dell XPS 16 and HP DV7 laptops had pretty good sound, far far better than the junk speakers in the Asus.

i dont think the speakers are junk, they are probably audible...its the sound system itself. maybe they really sound terrible cranked up so they turned the output down..hell let us decide, I wasnt expecting great sound but I was expecting to hear it. my hp dv8000 was the same way, but I think it is actually louder. it is just a shame this does so many things well, they couldve fixed that instead of throwing in a fag bag and a mouse.

lol, it's an Asus thing...I can't hear my W3J either. My wife laughs when I have the laptop next to my ear if the TV is on or the kids are in the room.

There is a way to improve the output of the sound on the G51. Right-click on the speaker in your system tray and left-click on "Sounds"...on the window that comes up after that, select the Playback tab...select the first of the 3 options "Speakers" and then select "Properties"...That will bring up the "Speakers Properties" window...select the "Enhancements" tab and make sure that "Loud Equalization" is checked.

That will increase your speaker volume. Hope that helps...at least some.

With mobile gaming, the consideration was, these units will be brought and played at LAN events where majority of the users use headsets and not the built in speakers. The speaker output was configured for more detailed but subtle output, to remain true to "personal computing" ideology.

I recall one of the engineers say, "Wouldn't you get scared if you hear a loud explosion coming out of nowhere while at the airport?"; it may be an exaggeration to the truth, but it is a conscious decision they took.

I agree with the general consensus but I managed to boost volume considerably by changing the sound setting to "powerful" in the Realtek HD sound manager. Does your asus use this sound card?

Have you tried turning on "loudness equalization"? This improved my output quite a bit.

Right click on your volume icon thats beside your clock (bottom right of screen)
    Select Playback devices
    Select Speakers then click properties
    Click on the Enhancements tab
Then click the Loudness Equalization check box

I heard about the low sound from this A1 laptop and was worried but the "dime sized" speakers are pretty good. It does squeal sometimes depending on whats playing but not often and overall I like them.

Someone just answered as I was typing this out. But it works! Try it!

I see.... Kind of dissapointed. Phoned into Asus about it and they blames the program even though they are COMPLETLY unreleated to one another(Itunes and Steam). So its highly unlikley its a software problem. Ill try again later and maybe I can get a non-ignorant rep who will try to help.... :[

Love my Asus G51 laptop...and have built many a machine over the years with their motherboards...but not happy at all over the delay of the Windows 7 Upgrade disk debacle...and it appears to be hard to get a straight answer from any of their reps on status or followup. I have heard at least 3 different answers from alleged Asus reps over when the upgrade disks are coming.

But, back to the thread subject, I hope some of these ideas on how to increase sound have at least helped some cope.

alright, Here is what I will do. I will experiment on my old dv8000, I will swap out speakers from my tx1200 see if there is a difference. then I may just pull the circuit board out of a small powered speaker set and put that inside the the laptop.

lol, I'm sure a loud explosion sound in an airport is a good way to become fast friends with TSA. But it is nice to have the option...especially since dedicated speakers on a coffee table isn't going to work (and looks like crap too) and headphones are out of the question because I need to make sure the animals and the kids aren't into something they shouldn't be.

I have replied to the thread.

I made it upfront and honest on my first post, that I can only help users who are in the US. I apologize if I can't assist you.

The loudness control is directly program into the BIOS soundtable (not that we're hinting anyone with AMI BIOS and Hex editing skills to make mods or anything). We have requested alterations to the EQ in the past and unfortunately was only provided a beta BIOS to test if it's better or not. In regards with free items, we have also bundled a set of headphones in the past.

There are some posts intentionally skipped to prevent a downward spiral of a thread. We are here to try and help forum members who need it. We also understand that everyone has a right to speak their mind, we also know and are prepare for less than friendly remarks and replies. Please do note that when we reply, it is a reply that has to be within what we are allowed to say or information we have access to.

That is fair, however people will not immediately realise that you can only help US forum users as they will not have seen your first post. A large proportion of users on here are based elsewhere is there anyway for you or another asus service rep can speak for those customers on here? Maybe a second "asus customer care" for international customers? At the end of the day asus is one big company so help should be extended to all that have purchased and invested in their products. Thanks
