hi, i just received my barebones z71v and am thinking of buying a 400 MHz FSB cpu and overclocking it (the dipswitch trick). what are the dangers (other than to the cpu) of overclocking it? can i damage my notebook in anyway? does it increase heat much or does it consume more power? i did a search and didn't come up with much. i haven't overclocked a cpu since i had a celeron 300a years ago, so i'm probably not up to date on these things. thanks.

Most P-M CPU's don't need to be run at 1.344v/1.38v and so most people undervolt them. For example, my 1.5GHz P-M would undervolt to 0.94v. I have now put it into my z71v and overclocked it to 2GHz (with the dip switch trick) but now I have to increase the voltage to 1.18v. As you can see, this is still well under the default 1.344/1.38v of the P-M. You can probably get away with a 1.8GHz 400FSB (max multiplier of 18) and overclocking it. If you go much faster, the 1.344/1.38v may not be enough (and you cannot overvolt the CPU, only undervolt it, unless maybe you started doing hardware mods to the CPU/motherboard).

As for heat issues. Well I've never heard my CPU fan turn on (and it's working properly, it kicks in at 50 degrees if I torture test it, but my CPU runs at 35-40 degrees most of the time)
