I am still :( trying to decide on the 'perfect' laptop. I though I'd narrowed it to the Asus V1j(p), but the cons in the review got me worried. (my FAQs are here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=1870845)

I figure Asus must be about the best since it is revered by high-tech notebook users, (altho ThinkPad has it's share of worshipers), and I hope I can get enough input to either convince me to buy Asus or steer me back to the ThinkPad T60, (the T60's keyboard and Flexview screen are tempting). My concerns about the V1jp (not sure what the 'p' means) are: 1) battery life
    2) heat & fan noise 3) flexing in screen & hinge

Like Bard (in "What Notebook Should I Buy?" section), I'm not a gamer and won't need really high-end graphics. But, it looks like 'game notebooks' have the speed and memory I want. My main requirement is quality and good service, as I want this to last many years. Please help! (i_want_my_ laptop)

If you are still looking for a notebook, just fill out the FAQ and post it in the What Notebook Should I Buy? section.

Otherwise, that Asus option is a good one.

Both V1JP and the T60/60p are excellent notebooks.
With your concerns of the battery life, you will want to read this:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3537

    2) Heat and noise, this notebook is quite powerfull, in a nice chassis, just like many notebooks that Asus have produced. It will be warm on the right hand side, where the vent is located. This is quite normal, and you don't have to worry about it.

The Fan noise is minimal to none when using on battery, but on AC you will hear it even doing normal tasks, that's because on AC mode you will be on Super Performance. However you can adjust this.

With regards to Flex and Hinges, once again, most laptops lid will have some flex, it is one of the hardest areas to reinforce without adding weight and thickness. I wouldn't see it as a problem. Many here owns the V1JP, many will agree it flexes, but it not like it will break and wreck your screen. Most laptops will flex there aswell and their laptops will not break at that point either.

Overall, I am sure you will be happy with the V1JP, aside from the battery problem, you will also need to consider the features and overall performance that the V1JP offers over the T60 series, but also read into that and check it out too.

Thanks mucho, altho I was hoping to get some hands-on recommendations for the V1j vs. the T60, considering my usage (guatam, my post had the link to the FAQs).

Oh Oh! ....darn, now I've added the Compal HEL80 to my list of possibilities.

Well, Asus aficionados-- should I join the club or not???????????
