Hi All,
Question for all you statisticians out there [xx(]
Whats the chance of getting a Z70V with a dead pixel in the screen? I have two options of resellers at this point:
(option 1 - CanadaSys) cheaper, and offers a dead pixel guarantee on purchase but with shoddy service and support (or so it seems)... don't have to wait as long to get it []
(option 2 - NCIX.com) slightly more expensive, no dead pixel guarantee, but a well established retailer
So, to all of you out there in Asus-notebook land,
(1) how likely is it that I'll get a dead pixel on any random Z70V, and
(2) which retailer would you go with?
Thanks a ton,
Sandeep

The odds of having warranty issues are small. I dont know the odds of having a dead pixel. It must be higher, since Asus is very strict and clear about what constitutes warranty issues with dead pixels.
Anyway, if by chance you have a warranty issue, you could run into a major headache if you go with the bad dealer. But, if you go with the good dealer, you could have a major headache by having dead pixels.
Personally, I would choose the no-dead-pixel option. I believe the odds of having a dead pixel are greater than having other warranty issues.
On the flip side, if the no-dead-pixel place sucks with service, how are they going to treat you if you do have a dead pixel?

The more you talk about a dead pixel, the better your chances are you be the one out of 1,000 that will get one.... I'm so serious, you're going to jinx yourself.
Otherwise, it's not really an issue and I can speak from many years of experience with all of the lcd comapnies Asus deals with.... very very good.
Thanks,
Justin

I don't really understand the obsession with dead pixels, I think Justin is right on this one. After having used and/or touched probably 15 notebooks over the last 10 years, I have yet to notice problems with pixels by naked eye. For that reason, I refuse to use a program (dead pixel buddy) that will point out any imperfection to me, and thus drive me nuts.

Whenever I think of dead pixels, I remember someone's LCD screen I once saw, with this enormously bright magenta pixel standing out on a black screen, and it looked just god awful. After doing some research though, it seems that the reality is that the pixels are much tinier than I would've thought... and with an SXGA+ screen, they're probably even smaller.

That's true..... from my experience, the only notebooks we've ever had anyone point out a bad pixel on are say a 15.1 xga or 15.4" wxga ..... 1 on say a 12" xga that I know of... but the smaller the pixels (the higher the res) the less pixels are supposed to stick out and therefore when they're missing your eye fills in the blank anyway and interpolates the color without you noticing.... With big screens and low res... then you can pick it up without a problem.........
but without a dead pixel finder like we use when we're configuring the system.... you finding a single dead pixel is almost impossible... it's why the warranties on them are basically 3 or more dead pixels before they'll qualify for a replacement.... with like 1.5 million pixels on one screen it's impossible for every one of those to stay good...... the LCD makers warranty on them is still up in the 10-15% range.. Where 10-15% of the screen has to be bad before they'll replace it....... so being stuck with 2 pixels out of 1.5 million isn't all that bad.
Thanks,
Justin

I think what really put it into perspective for me, was the fact that the random specs of dust on my current CRT monitor resembled the dead pixels that I saw in my researches [
] And I don't really get bothered by the dust, so...

Lets put it this way, the claim of dead pixels far outweighs the actual accounts of them..... 9 times out of 10, a customer calls all worried about their new system, then call back and said "oh.. it turned out just to be dust" ...... they are afraid to touch it, but a little compressed air takes care of them.
Thanks,
Justin

Something everyone who is worried about dead pixels should consider. There are a few retailers out there that offer dead pixel policy. Never read their policy. Not sure how they can offer dead pixel polic on asus whitebooks. Here is something to consider. Most people who get a dead pixel will not call back to get an exchange if a dead pxiel policy is offered. The ones that do will wait a bit and get a new screen. My question is where do the old lcd's go? They dont go back to the manufacturer. They are not thrown away. Where do they go? If most people wont call for an exchange a likely scenario is they will go back out in the field on new shells or as replacements for broken screens. I may be wrong or i am may be right.
