    Hi all,
I own a 4 month old asus z33a which I absolutely love, but lately I've been having problems using it for DVD playback. It emits this high pitched noise and it can't play DVD movies at all. I've tried unistalling and reinstalling the DVD software but it didn't work. I thought it was the DVDs but they work fine on my desktop and my old Toshiba laptop. Also, the drive works all right with CDs for installing applications so it's probably not hardware problem. Can anyone help?

Just because it plays CD's, does not mean it's not hardware related.
DVD combo drives use different optics [and wavelengths] to read the different mediums [CD's and DVD's].
Sounds like you already did some basic troubleshooting, so I would contact your reseller for support.

    Good Luck!
