the question is simple:how do you want to play oblivion .

first of i would suggest you take 1024mb of ram .i have read a test that said there was alot of difference going from 512 to 1024 mb of ram ,1 to 2 gig was alot less .

and you will get performance gains going from solo to dual core ,and from 5400 to 7200 rpm . but you shouldnt worrie to much about the hdd i think
in order of best gains it is:
    memory
    cpu
    hdd
if somebody can confirm places 1 and 2 dont really recon what gains are made with going to dual core

i would like to play oblivian for less than 750

because i have older laptop parts i can make an msi 1029 for 617

it seems like such a waste to buy a msi 1029 for 550 when an asus s96j costs almost the same. unfortunately it requires newer parts so it hikes up the cost at least 200 right now.

If you know of a different set up for less or anything please let me know. Im working on less as opposed to more. also any insight into what sort of dvd drive works with the barebones. I have a sony pcg nvr 23 anything i should look for in the dvd drive to see if it would fit? or hook up?

With that kind of a budget, honistly, I think your better off with something like a Dell E1505. If you can spend at least $900, go for the S96j.

cheapest I could get a e1505 for with x1400 is 830 ith coupons etc

thanks for the suggestion though but wouldnt you feel this is inferior? a x1400 with 60 gb 512 mb e1505 or x1600 s96 j although its a solo 40gb 512 mb. slam dunk to me.

It seems like the msi 1029 for 600 is going to be hard to beat though. although the ram is lower the initial cost for its game compatibility is going to be tough to beat. Itll even be 64 bit and the time it will have to be up to date will be much smaller....
