i was really set on the g1, however the g1s came out. i work at best buy and they sell the g1s for $1749 and i look online and they sell the g1 for about 1700.

will the price of the g1 go down at all or has it?

i would get the g1s just cuz its only 49 bucks more and has a better graphics card and chipset. however i feel as though it wud eat up more battery power and i hear a lot about some bios problem and all these other problems. i think id like to stick to the g1 because i dont need an 8600gt or a santa rosa and i want to avoid all the problems from the g1s.

are there any major differences between the g1 and the g1s other than the gpu and santa rosa?

what are the pros and cons of getting the g1s vs the g1.

im just really torn on what to get because the g1s seems it has more power but i dont wanna risk going through problems with it and having to sacrifice battery power and weight. thanks =]

Definitely go for the G1S if you are going to buy one now. Also, if Best Buy still has some G1 left and it is what you prefer to have, then you should ask for more discount if possible, because the demand on the G1 is no where close to the G1S by now.

can you state the main differences between the two. is it just the gpu and the santa rosa chip?

will the g1s heat up more and eat up more battery life? i feel as though if that is the case the G1 would be more reliable and still be enough power for me because i do not need an 86000gt or santa rosa however if it is not a problem then for 50 bucks more it is well worth it.

i work over in nj in princeton. i just started about a week or so ago. i did sell the asus g1s. i find not a lot of people buy that computer or even ask questions about it just becuase its the most expensive unit we carry there. whats epi?

is that some employee discount? i wud never buy this laptop from best buy though because it does not come with the back pack mouse and i hear that the bb version which is the g1s-x1 vs the g1s-a1 comes with a .2 ghz less processor and 1 year less warranty. if i can find a g1 for about 1350-1500 im sold.

im still not hearing so much input in terms of which one is better in terms of battery life, weight, and reliability.

also other questions.. all i hear are problems about BIOS, grainy screens, and the cpu running at 50% when the battery is below 90%.. are all these things fixed? if i purchase one by the end of this summer will they already by fixed or would i still need to download updates and such to fix these? are there even any updates or such that would fix ALL of these problems?

would i be better off getting a G1 ( the generation before the G1s or the one without santa rosa ) because i dont hear any bad things about it. i dont REALLY REALLY need the 8600gt because im not playing too hardcore games, plus all the things the g1 doesnt have as opopsed to the g1s.

For the 49 dollar difference you should get the G1S regardless if you need the power or not. It is only an extra 49 dollar for a better CPU and GPU. The G1 has "problems" too with drivers and such. I'd get the G1S

i feel as though the only threads i see about problems are with the G1s.. i have yet to see a thread about a G1 having problem. that may be because people stopped buying the g1 and that is why they dont post anymore threads about them.

does anyone know if these problems have been fixed regarding, cpu performance, battery, grainy screens, shutdown/hibernate/waking up. everytime i check back on this site someone posts a new problem with their g1s. and everytime i look for a resolution to a problem in a thread it always says try reinstalling or downloading drivers yet none of those threads report any success to it. this just makes me really hesistant to buy a g1s.

are these problems worked out or will they ever be?

edit: and sorry if i ask a lot of questions and such its just that its an expensive investment and i need a new laptop i just want to make sure i get the best out of my 1800 dollars. when i found this laptop it dominated everything else that i had in my mind (abs mayhem, dell xps, sager, etc) i debated between a lot of laptops and then when i found this one it was the best bang for the buck. thanks for all your help guys! =)

If it's battery life you've been wondering mostly about, there is virtually no difference in the G1 and G1s. On 50% brightness, and if you use power4gear to downclock your processor, you can get about 2 hours 15 minutes on either machine. Also, the weight is the same for both laptops, as they use the same chassis (plus HDMI and eSata).

Even if the G1s was $150 more, it's still a much better bargain. $49 bucks is a steal.

Its hard to tell whether the problems people (like myself) are having are G1s specific, or due to immature drivers and o/s. Windows Vista is a more demanding and newer O/S than XP, so it is unsurprising that issues arise. Personally despite my issues I think the G1s is a solid machine let down by poor software. In time, as drivers etc are developed to get the best from hardware under Vista, things may improve.

Just my 2 cents based on my own experience. Others may have a better story to tell, and indeed those without problems would probably not post here anyway!

yeh i know what you are saying. it seems that the majority of the g1s' have the same problems. i haven't been to a thread that talked about a problem and having someone go 'i dont have that problem with mine' or 'i downloaded a driver and its fine now'. but do you think for sure that all these problems and such will be fixed in time with patches or drivers?

if there is no difference in the battery life then i dont care, its just i hear that when the battery is below 90% the cpu runs at 50%. perhaps i didnt read clearly in the threads, but is there a way to change that through the power management tools or something? i mean if its just a setting that ASUS puts on to manage the battery than thats fine i can just tweak it and change it on my own. however if its a setting or problem i cant fix than i might be a little bit worried.

i seem to have decided to stick with the G1s thanks to you guys. however i still want to hear from people about all these problems and whether they have been fixed or what i can do when i do purchase my g1s.

    also..
is it just me or is the screen not as bright and vivid as youd thought it would be. i have the asus g1s on display at best buy and compared to some other laptops the screen isnt all that bright and clear as others. perhaps its just the finish or the settings.
and the left click and right click buttons are kind of a turn off for me, the push down distance is really short and it seems like you need to press down harder than other laptops. its just weird for me.

There can always be flukes and problems when ordering any laptop. However, most problems are definitely fixable. Also, you have to keep in mind Vista is still relatively new and so are the drivers for DX10 and the cards that support it. Im sure you will have some small problems but they can be easily solved. And about the G1S' screen, I think it is amazing. I was playing Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War the other day was very impressed with the clarity of everything, this is just one example. Finally, Im glad you chose the G1S. Personally, I cant imagine why you would want a laptop with old technology like that, unless your favorite game is Starcraft and you dont need to have a laptop that is up to date. Finally, when your laptop isnt plugged in and running on battery, you really dont 100% of your CPU. I mean, do you usually game when your mobile? How does that work using the touch pad?

thats true.. yeh I want to thank you guys again for leading me to the right direction and to the G1s. Is the g1 really that bad of a system as far as the gpu. im sure you can play games decent on it and it was just an exaggeration.
i plan on playing battlefield 2, cs: cz and maybe source, call of duty 4, brothers in arms, mostly FPS games modern warfare and wwII.

and i guess youre right about the gaming on the go. i mean perhaps i may do it if im really bored at a cafe or something plus ill prolly carry around my mouse with me. what i really want to know is can you change the power settings so itll always run at 100% or maybe have the cpu run at 50% when the battery is below 50% instead of 90%.

I dont think the CPU goes down at 90%. I will have to double check on mine but when I calibrate my battery I usually unplug my notebook and play CSS so the battery goes down faster. I cant say I have experienced any less performance when below 90% battery.

My understanding of the thread was it runs fine on full power while on battery or while plugged in when the battery is 90% or better, but if you plug it in and run it on AC power while the battery is below 90% and charging, the CPU throttles down. Maybe someone who actually has the issue can clarify?

thats weird. I would think that the cpu throttles down when the battery is below 90% battery power to try and save battery juice. IT doesnt make sense for it to throttle down when its plugged in because it doesnt need to save juice since its getting direct power from a source.

is there definitely a way to change these settings so that it runs 100% all the time or maybe have the cpu throttle down when the battery is below 50% instead of 90%?
