DDXY, did you buy the Z71v? if so, yes there's 2 major problems with it, the Screen exhibits sparkles, and the battery is reported to stop charging..supposedly they fixed that but still. THe weight is 6.6 lbs
For 100$ more you can get the Z70va, better build quality, 6lbs, and a small chance to get a red ghost screen, in which ur retailer will replace if it occurs.
But this laptop runs a little warm compared to the Z71v which is cooler.
Overall get a Z70va or a W3J
Hope this helps,
Thanks,

Thank you very much, I have not bought it. I have some options, Z71v, hp nx8220. I'd like to buy Z70va, but It will cost 150-200 CAD more. And I can't find Z70va in my town, I may buy it online. But I don't know which one can I choose. Someone recomded canadasys, I want konw more online shops. -

The sparkly screen is more of a new standard where 99 out of 100 people really will not notice and will not care though it does look different and we have had our fair share of returns becuase of it. The battery issue has been rectified a few months ago as all the bad batteries were replaced and remade with new cells. So far so good.

get the z70va if you can. its worth the extra hundred bucks.

Others you can try are located in the FAQ in the sticky at the top of the forum.

Thank you for all the replies. Z70va exceeds my budget. If I can find a job this summer, I will buy it
. I just use the laptop to play PES5, fm2006 and cs1.5. These games don't have high reqirements. And I want to use the new laptop for 3-5 years.
Anyway, thank you again for the useful information. -
the z70va is end of life. i wouldnt bet on seeing it this summer.
-
why get older technology when the new duo core tech will be out with most likely a better video card.
-
My budget is only about 1300 CAD (tax not include). So Z71v is the best one I can buy according to my budget. Is Z70va much better than Z71v?
-
thats now. by then there will be a core duo model of some sort for the same price.
-
What I am realy concerned about is video card. -
DDXY, the only thing different about the Z70Va and the Z71V is the design, materials used in chassis, screen and videocard.
The sparkle effect on the screen is evident on most LCDs so I don't know what the big deal was. It's normal in my opinion and doesn't bother much at all.
The battery issue was resolved to my understanding a long time ago.
You don't have to go with the latest stuff, so I say, if you can get your hands on one of these Z71V's go for it.
Great price for what you're getting. Just about a year ago that thing was much more money.
It only goes for about 1300 now? Whoa, sweet. -
If you're big on gaming, do note that you'll get better performance out of the z70va. While the 6600 is usually equivalent to the x700, the z71v's is underclocked at 250MHz, and thus underperforming.

Thank you for your helps.
I found the Z71v in http://www.infonec.com/site/main.php?module=detail&id=13801 (This shop was recommended in the FAQ in the sticky at the top of the forum). The price is sweet. This is the lowest price I can find. But I don't have any experience on buying from online shops. Can I trust this shop? -
Try reselleerratings.com to check how other customers rate their service.

I would check out Danny at www.canadasys.com.
From what I've seen so far he's great. Deals with things directly instead of going through Asus like my reseller. My reseller is great still.
www.pacificnotebooks.com
Remember those prices aren't written in stone, you can bargain if you go there in person.
A bunch of my friends have gone to pacificnotebooks because I sent them there.
So if you say Mike sent you, you will be treated well.
What do I get out of this? Nothing really, I just like the guys there so I send my friends there.
Cheers,

Remember most prices you see for Z71V are barebones! You still need to add CPU, HDD, Optical drive & SODIMM. (link to infonec is barebones I think)
Be aware Asus has 2 models of Z71V. Original one (Z71V-P) has 128MB of video mem and a better quality screen.
But the new/latest model is an economy version w/ only 64MB dedicated (Still a 6600 Go?) and same screen as the Z71A, that still takes DDR2 SODIMM & SATA HDD.
Search Google & ebay, I have been since Xmas, still learning! Good Luck d8d

Building 2 units? Whoa, I'm guessing that only one is for you?
I'd say sure why not, it's a great notebook, but I hope it's not for gaming, since new mobile GPU's are out and the 6600go is outdated and wouldn't run newer games well.
If you want best prices in the US I've read nothing but good stuff about newegg.com, which you already probably know about. Even still, look around your area for local computer shops for possibly even lower prices. Like here in Canada we have canadacomputers.com, which have THE lowest prices on stuff because they buy in huge quantities. They have over 8 locations or something like that so they usually sell for the lowest prices. Maybe you could even get a lower price from Canadacomputers even after shipping.
Check it out. www.canadacomputers.com, to see if they ship to the US.
Here's a comparison in prices for you. I bought a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook PCMCIA sound card from them for 99.99 CDN, while at other big name stores like The Source by Circuit City they had the same card, but older revision for 169.99 CDN.
WOW -
The Source by Circuit City is possibly the worst place to try to get computer parts in the existence of Canadian electronics retailers. They are always more expensive than anyone else and they usually carry ****py quality junk as well. Use Best Buy or Future Shop for comparison if you must.
In my opinion, Canada Computers has gone downhill lately in terms of quality of service. They are getting bigger than just the corner computer store, hence their purchasing power, but at the cost of the customer becoming more of just a number. That said, if they're cheaper, go with them, cause they're still fairly reliable. I still buy most of my random accessories there, and I have a good repoire with the Waterloo location staff.

Thank you for the suggestions, I will buy Z71v from canadasys.

Haha, yeah you're right killerjay, they treat you like you were buying fish at Chinatown, without the yelling and smells of course.
Thing is I don't mind waiting for service if it's going to save me some money.
Their return policy is actually on par with other stores. Anything defective gives you a full refund, none of that in store credit **** or no return/final sale policy that many stores have. Like bigfootcomputers. Their prices are highest and they have a final sale policy, nothing is returnable, you have to contact the manufacturer yourself.
Sometimes canadacomputers lets you return stuff without a restocking fee if you're going to get something else from the store instead.
I like 'em. Saved me almost a hundred bucks on my mobile soundcard.
