about a month ago i was going to get an hp dv8000t, but opted for the s96j because of size and the fact that hp has chronically bad keyboards. Not that i dont enjoy the irony, but i was none too thrilled when my s96j arrived and half of the keys don't work :( .. I can't even type-in the windows certification key. :( :( :(

Looks like a loose cable, just contact your dealer, or fix it yourself, which isn't hard.

I know this is a very silly question, but when you say half the keyboard does not work, does that mean nothing happens at all when you press down on the key?
