Hi, I have an ASUS Z70V Refresh laptop recently a hinge cover came off...no big deal I simply pushed it back in but now when I lifted off up the screen to open the laptop it seems to be splitting apart at the seam that runs from the top to the bottom at the bottom right corner.

This is a side view of the bad side when I close it

for reference here is the unbroken side of the laptop.

Two screws came out...one was the rubber tipped screw from the front of the screen and the other is a smaller one which I don't know where it came from.

anyway has this happened to anyone else? I haven't done anything that would cause this except simply opening and closing the screen. They want to charge me 200 bucks to fix this but the computer still works so it should be just a matter of getting the screen reattached. i can remove the screen to fix this and see what really is wrong?

That's royally screwed up. I will tell you flat out that it's actually your fault as that happens when the screws start to loosen up and by doing so, it puts more force on the lid and after a long enough period of time you end up with that. It's certainly the worst I've seen and well beyond where most people would start to question what's going on and try to find a fix... But saying you simply opened it and closed it is obvious - what is also obvious is that the routine maintenance that should be done on any system wasn't. At some point you had to notice the screen started to get rather loose. If you catch it in time and tighten the screws on the lid, you'd be fine.... now it's too late.

You need a new lid which is about $55-60- plus shipping... and labor if someone else were to do it.... so you're right, it probably would come close to $175-200. You could do it yourself and save you a bit of money.... but I can tell you without a doubt that it's all you need.

Now, I will say this... if your last computer was a dell, you probaly would have thought this was normal and you could have written it off until it got to the point it is... however, even that isn't an excuse. You're just lucky it can be taken care of and it's not more expensive.

Drop me an email.... I know we have a lot of special z70 lids and I could see what I could do for you if you'd like some help.

The screen never split apart at all until it was like you see now its not like I saw something funky happening to it that got progressively worse...the screw in the front may have loosened but its not like it was popped out to be obvious or anything. Closing it one time was enough to pop it and break the seam as you see and its pretty much the way it was when it broke.

    Wow that is bad...
However, yes, Justin is right... all you need is a new lid. I personally have done a lid swap before (thanks Justin) and it's not too difficult. Just take your time and keep track of all of the little screws...

That's true... once it got loose, closing it one time would make that final pop.
