Check the power options in control panel.

    Is it in hibernation?

I had the same issue on two types of Asus notebooks. For me, it happens when I use external monitors. I found no solution to it (didn't look too far either)...

One (dumb, but effective) workaround is to put the NB into standby (FN+F1), and then hit CTRL to resume. The screen will come back to life w/o a reboot being needed.

Well, there are ways when you hook up an external monitor to do a bunch of things...

    1. do a mirror view which exports exactly what you see on the screen, but still have the screen on to use to control it while others watch the big screen..

    2. do a dual view where you have two different desktops to use to span across a two monitors.

    3. turn off the laptop screen and export the main desktop to an external monitor......

If you do #3, especially without knowing, it can be frustrating to figure it out...... but the FN + lcd button would cycle through those.
