recently i went on a trip. I packed away my laptop into the bag and set off, but about one hour later the bag felt very very warm. So i opened the bag to check it out, and when i touched the computer i almost burnt myself.

I got it out tho and was able to turn it on, it was stuck in loading windows for a long time, and a message about checking my disks came up, and i saw a list of " retrieving orphaned file (name of file here). it seemed to work ok for the rest of the day.

today i come home, boot it up, and it started crashing very frequently, i press ctrl+alt+delete and get a security message about how it could not be loaded. So i have to do a reset by holding down power, it happens again, and again and again.

But wierldy enough, i can use it just fine in safe mode ( im writing this in safe mode as we speak). But safe mode isn't very usefull for some things. I need help.

is the reason a virus or some sort? as it works in safe mode but not otherwise.
or is the problem what happened yesterday? maybe something burnt?

i sent an email to asus, but until i get a message i need help.

would this be covered by my 2 year warranty? i got the computer in june.

Well, was the sun directly at it? I guess something burned in there.

It should be covered by warranty, as long as you dont tell them you let it burn under the sun :)

You should be able to get Asus to RMA/fix your laptop just because of the bad CD-Drive... Then, at the same time you could ask them to check out what's wrong too... Wouldn't hurt to ask.

There is a way to install windows without the CD if you still have your recovery partition. Just hit F9 during bootup. Otherwise things get more complicated, but at the worst you can borrow or buy an external drive.

Maybe it works in safe mode because Windows is not stressing some hardware that got messed up during the heat episode (e.g., GPU 3D is not activated).

Are you sure the heat was from an external cause and you didn't forget your notebook on in the bag? :)

im know the heat wasn't from an external source. But, the day that happend it was working fine and dandy, i wa able to play WoW, next day it started, every 10min it crashed, and it happened when too many windows were open ( like msn open and having like 6 tabs in firefox) When i start up wow, almost 10sec into the game i get the crash, and music starts skipping, and everyone in game is naked.

    Brian,

it sucks that you are having bad luck with your asus.....I know it must be a nightmare.

But I don't really understand how your laptop got so hot??? You said the laptop was turned off right? If so, How did it get so hot? Does not make sense to me??

I also don't see how the sun could have made it hot...especially if it was in a case....

It doesn't get hot in the case, even if black, is fairly non conductive, even more so in a A/C'ed vehicle. However, it is very insulated.

I've left my notebook in a black sleeve in a car for a whole day at the beach, it was fairly hot(For Toronto, so like, 34~ degrees? :p), especially inside a black vehicle with no case. It was warm to the touch at best after 5-6 hours from noon to the early evening when I went to get the blankets.

Are you really sure it did not turn off before you put it in the sleeve, and then it auto shutdown due to the heat? Cause there is simply no way it can get that hot, even in direct sunlight on a hot day, it does get close.

I don't want to say that you are lying but the details just don't make any sense, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. I'd contact ASUS and see what they can do.

cori if you recall (i do i dont know why) alot of people talked about this. The cause was that the notebook was hibernated or turned off then placed in the bag. it never actually shut down it just stayed on and overheated. all the built in protection that is designed to shut it down did not kick in. What can be happening now is possibly bad ram. also damage to the mainboard. unlikely the cpu is broken but possible. start with the ram

RMA it, you said that the drive hasn't been working since you got it, that would be enough to warrant a RMA. This is a off the shelf build, it should work correctly, if not RMA, and I wouldn't say anything that could suggest you feel responsible for any damage (if any) while RMAing.

so, hopefully this is all sorted out within a month?
