Merom is definately the laptop version. And Conroe is the Desktop version.
Conroe is scheduled to be released for the end of July and prices will vary from 200$-999$ for the CPU.
Merom is roughly scheduled for August, but there's seems to be very little info from any laptop manufacturer on whether how fast they can bring out Merom based laptops. -
Won't be for a while. even when the CPU is out.
edit: Referring to 'new' releases btw. -
Intel has confirmed that all VBI notebooks will only need a BIOS flash to be Merom compatible.

Say what does VBI mean? sorry little behind on the lingo

Verified By Intel.

VBI has been discussed numerous times. To get a better understanding of it, please do a search in the ASUS and Compal sections and read the threads that discuss it.

WHy exactly would intel release merom in august when they have time and time again went through 2 price drops during the life of a chipset. One during the first quarter one during the third. The current yonah had only one price drop. Another one scheduled for august. If merom comes out there will not be any need for yonah. This means that all manufacturers who just started now shipping their products with yonah will be forced to sell out very quickly or sell below cost? Doesnt sound right. In the history of atleast the last 3 years everytime there is a chipset conversion it happens during the dead season, that would be christmas. I am a sceptic. Doubt it will come out any time before the end of the year.

I think they're just trying to get all their cores over to this new architecture as soon as possible. Even though the Pentium-M cores, and by evolution Yonah, had very little netburst in them, this major architecture shift across their entire product line stands for leaving the horrible mistake that was netburst behind. Even though netburst will continue to linger for awhile (hell, they made 486's until a few years ago, for ATM machines and such), a smooth and clean transition will not only raise the esteem of their employees in order to get their feet under themselves moving forward, but it will make the architecture seem stronger to consumers.
All that BS, and I'm sure Intel knew AMD was planning Turion X2. If it weren't for that Yonah may have been cancelled in favor of Merom, but they couldn't allow AMD to breach their stronghold by beating them to mobile dual core. Especially not after Intel gave into AMD by admitting the future is in lower clocks, better power consumption, higher IPC, and multiple cores.
Or maybe they pushed Conroe up on the desktop in order to take full advantage of AMD's lack of a next gen architecture. Then they decided to push Merom up for the reasons I outlined above. Plus there's the marketing designation, you don't want to have core 2 duo on the desktop while the mobile part lags behind at core duo.
I just can't see them launching Woodcrest and Conroe without Merom close behind. -
Asus here in Sweden told me that they had delayed the release of the W1J until september, so they could ship it with a Merom CPU. So if they weren't lying to me, the first Merom lapies will be on sale in september.

I can't wait!
After many problems that I have run into trying to buy the W3j. Out of stock etc. I have decided to just wait another 2-3 months for Merom. At least I still have a desktop
so i heard in 2-3 weeks asus is going to releasing new laps.. will they have merom ?
