so it looks like my f3sv just kicked the bucket.... Was in the middle of playing tf2, then all of a sudden the graphics got really laggy, then random checker patterns everywhere, then it shut down. Tried restarting but all I got was a grey screen with black horizontal strips.

I'm going to assume this is due to the bad nvidia cards that were present in this laptop model. Does anyone know what they will do for me? Im going to assume they wont put another 8600GS in the laptop (or did they fix the problems with those graphics cards?), so does anyone know what they do with these laptops that go bad?

ASUS warranty's pretty good, but I don't think they give you a better video card or a new laptop, they'll just replace your notebook GPU with a new one. :(

Im in the UK and in my experience (two RMA's for the F3Sv), they will just replace the whole mobo, which should have another gpu pre soldered onto it..I think! It does seem like your GPU is dead. Get ready for at least 2+weeks wait. Also note that if it takes more than 21days or it is your 3rd RMA, they have a policy which mean they HAVE to offer you a replacement (normally the same model, and vary rarely a slightly better specd model)...This process is quoted to take 2weeks or so.

P.S out of interest im getting my "fixed" F3sv back tomorrow, could you be able to post your CPU/GPU temps, both idle and gaming. Mine were as below (in Celcius):

    Idle:
    CPU - 56
    GPU - 72

    Gaming:

    CPU - 74
    GPU - 80-90

I hope it is reduced, because a GPU idling at 74 seems awfuly high.

Its a good thing i dont need to send it to the UK service depo, heard nothing but bad things from them :p

and, my temps were very similar to yours

    idle GPU - 69
    gaming GPU - 90

I never monitored my CPU temps. I also had a little stand that I kept it on, so that helped with airflow below the laptop (it lowered the temps about 2 degrees). So i would say your temps are average for an f3sv. I can post again when I get the laptop back if you would like.

Oh right cheers. For some reason i was under the impression that other F3Sv owners had much lower temps, or maybe im going by the one of the threads in which someone had an idle gpu temp in the low 60's.

well you could always consider undervolting the CPU, that should lower temps by a bit. Maybe the person with lower than 60 degrees for the GPU had a notebook cooler?

Fittersman, you could try my No-POST checklist (tips and tricks thread).

But it does seem the GPU has kicked the bucket. :) Do you hear booting sounds, or see normal HDD activitiy? Try running the computer on an external screen. That should give you more info.

Also, in some instances, (specifically G1S motherboard+GPU) ASUS has replaced an older nVidia model with a newer one (specifically G1Sn motherboard+GPU). Not sure if it is possible with the F3, though -- e.g., there may not be an updated model so no newer GPU may be available.

Also, if any of you are getting high GPU temps maybe it's time for a cleanup? 90 degrees is a bit above my comfort level. :)

too late to try anything now, i just sent it off this morning. The signs were quite clear that it was a GPU defect to me (first it was screwing up in game giving me a checker pattern across the screen, then it would completely shut down the computer without even giving a BSOD, then it only gave a grey screen on boot all within 20 seconds). The computer boots normally, normal HDD activity and the weird problem i had with the LCD shutting off while loading ubuntu still happened.

I was getting 90 degree temps from day 1, so a cleanup likely wouldnt help much (those temps are a bit above my comfort level too, but there wasnt much i could do about it short of buying a cooler or something).

Would be nice to get a card not affected by the whole nvidia fiasco, but I doubt they will give me anything "new." Does anyone know if the new nvidia 8xxx series chips are still affected by that problem?

I also told them to fix the crack on the palmrest, wonder if they will do that for me :)

I just got my notebook back, and i even asked them NOT to fix the crack in the palm rest, because the UK rma is known to take ages, however they replaced it. My mobo got replaced, but the temps are the same, so i dont think anything "new" has been fitted.

Fittersman, I think they will fix the palmrest for you. They did for me, of course , it was after they cracked it upon fixing my HD. Asus Indy pretty good about turn around time. Lost all my stickers unfortunately. Good Luck !

    Lost the stickers? :) I would consider a sticker-free palmrest a bonus. :p
