my girlfriends laptop is an Asus and there is a big problem, it wont get past diskcheck for some reason it gets stuck on this screen:

I have a feeling it is bad news but what can be done to fix it?.

If there's nothing that can be done, can the files be retrieved off the laptop?

help would be greatly appreciated guys, there's a dissertation and many other important files that are at stake here :( she was turning it on to back all the files onto an external HD!! such bad luck

... and no back ups of the dissertation anywhere???

You may take out the hdd and put it into an external hdd box and connect to another laptop via USB. I have saved lots of stuff that way (provided that the HDD performs OK).

when check disk pops in like this, it's usually an indication of some bad sectors on the hard drive...I would first see what happens by letting it run..it sometimes works itself out...if that doesn't work, trying mounting the drive in other system like you did to perform the backup and scan it that way with a disk defragging tool...

personally, once all my data has been backed-up for sure, I would kill the drive and reformat it as NTFS

    just my 1 cent

In older versions of XP, this screen was triggered by a bad shutdown procedure.

Definitely let it run, as MadHouse suggests it's probably a couple of bad sectors that cropped up and just need to have the data restored and copied to good ones by ChkDsk.

If this error starts popping up regularly, check the SMART log to see if it warns of a pending drive failure.

AND please go back and edit the picture smaller. thx.

Or try to see if you can boot to safe mode.

If you have a XP installation disk you can boot run setup from the disk and repair existing Windows installation.

I'm assuming that you've let the disk check run at least a couple of times. You have a couple of other options as well in this case. The root cause of this is your drive is somewhat corrupted and chkdsk is never able to completely resolve it to the point where it clears the dirty bit. If you have a windows installer CD you can boot with that and get into the recovery console and run chdsk from there. It may work better than the boot-time chkdsk. Alternatively, you could take the drive out and put it in another machine and clear the dirty bit manually with chkntfs /x E: where E is the drive letter. This risks further corrupting the drive, but you may be able to boot from it.

In any scenario, you may want to back up or image the drive at this point, because you are probably going to lose some data.

Because of Murphy's law, a personal advice is that one should do a regular backup, if he/she is doing important work like writting dissertation on the notebook.
I recently finished my dissertation and I was using GoodSync to automatically do backup of my dissertation data every 15 minutes while I was writing. I had 2 backup sources. A 16GB SD card and an external drive which was plugged in all the time.
Futhermore, every 1 hour the data was also copied by GoodSync to network.
This sounds too much but it is worth it in case a disaster occurs. It is better than losing for example 6 months of hard dissertation work.

    2.5 inch SATA external enclosure.

    USB 2.0 connection.

I.e. like this search @ Newegg.

You're in the U.K., so you'll have to adjust for local retailers.
