man, i wish i never saw this today

even the 14" is sxga AND x700 128!
-
It does look nice, but think of the Price Tag.
Honestly, SONY's are expensive enough, but this one I can see $2000+
I'm also wary of the heat, unless the x700 has been undervolted -
Yup, might as well get the W2. Also all those BX are low res except the 17" model. I like that it has SATA, but really, who actually feels the difference? So I'd would say no to the BX series. It does look nice though.
-
I was hoping Sony would come out with a 14" Widescreen with ATI Mobility Radeon x700 to compete with the w3v. However I wouldn't buy the Sony one though.
If Asus has competition in the 14" widescreen arena with better specs, they'll be coming out with a laptop with way better specs than the competition! That's what I'd buy !!!(with competitive prices) So it'll be good for us! -
Wow, that 14'' sony with the edge wireless thing looks attractive! It will be interesting to see if it also has heat issues like the sony S series and asus w3v. Let's hope it does cause if not ill be jelous as hell. Of course we expect sony to price this above $2000 and of course it wont have the aluminum brushed lid and carbon fiber chasis that the w3v has
.
-
Mademike the 14in comes in sxga it isnt low rez at all for a 14.1 i never understood why more companys dont produce glare type in higher than xga rez.

Says prices starting at 1299. Thats a lot less then the 2000 that is expected from sony -
1299 is for the celeron, integrated graphics garbage =x
The real laptops will be much more expensive
Just as an aside, the sony s series is listed as starting from $1219 with the 'good' or well equiped models running into $1800+ and even more if you customize. -
yeah wait till u add options it will hit 2000 easily.
-
didnt see that it can come with a celeron processor. It wouldnt have been bad if it came with a Pentium M and 512MB of ram for that price
-
hmm it does looks nice at the firsttime but IMHO i don;t really like that front part filled with those slot card and headphone jack and etc it ruins the simplicity of the front side and well in my case it would be troublesome to jack an external speaker at the front side

The funny thing is that it looks like the sony BX will actually be made by ASUS and sold through sony, with the new Asus-Sony contract and all.
So in the case of "ASUS vs. BX series", ASUS can't loose. -
If the bx is upgraded to pentium M and better graphics card it would probably be 1800+. If the heat issure from the S series is fixed it could be a very good machine.
-
Opps i mistaken the Green and orange LED on the front as the jacks LOL
well it's good that its on the side but yeah Asus made things for Sony but in fact is most ppl ONLY knows bout It's a Sony then its good haha
and it's an Asus, it's a taiwanese company then no good hahaha
we need to clear things up that most manufactures are not producing their own brand with their own factory LOL -
So GREAT
Love the full featured universal docking station. Sony definitely gets the needs of the business environment.
I do hope they stick a more powerful graphics chip in there, but other than that, it certainly seems like it'd be a better choice for me and my colleagues.
Very sweet. -
Weak graphics card? An X700 in a 14" laptop isn't enough power? Having a performance card in a Sony is a feat in itself isn't it?
-
Didn't call it weak... but it isn't powerful enough (not for my line of work anyway).
The X700 is second tier as it is (behind the Nvidia chips), by the time I was to actually get one of these things (later this year, early next), it will have fallen farther in the performance category.
Anyway. Not knocking the X700, it's good enough for some. Just not for me. -
It's second tier, but for the form factor, I don't see how they could stick in an X800 or a 6800. As it is, I believe that this is the most powerful 14" model on the market.
I do agree that they could easily have placed in a top tier card for the 17" or even the 15.4" with some careful design, but Sony has always been a tad bit behind with graphics. I'm amazed that they've come so far just these past 2 years, especially for the smaller laptops. -
Oh definitely, in the 14 incher it'd be a tough squeeze (especially with cooling in mind). But I guess I'd be going 15 (and more likely 17). It truly is amazing how far laptops have come in the last few years. I personally will never go back to desktops... and with the way laptops have been advancing... it looks like I will never have to.
and PS: yeah, Sony has always lagged a bit behind on graphics power (which is why I was surprised to find that theyhad stuck a 6800 with 256 MB in their latest A series). -
Hi, when I read about the BX series I started to compare the 17" BX with the w2v. I was just wondering what other people think...
Thanks for sharing your thoughts in advance!
:asus: -
Well I'd still choose the W2 over it. Afterall, it's a full multimedia station. It's very slick, it's also thinner, has a higher resolution screen, comes with 2 remotes (1 also fits in the pc card slot), tv tuner/recorder, etc. I don't know but I'm not too fond of a 17" low res screen.
-
Well, I've got the W2V, but obviously not the new Sony BX (last laptop was a Sony Z1) -
But, first the W2V is has looks to die for - no way Sony compares
W2V brushed black metal is cool - 17 inch Sony most likely pastic (note in review it says onl magnesium for 14"
W2V slot loading - Sony drinks holder tray
W2V PVR - Sony nothing
W2V Sub woofer - Sony laptop speakers
W2V Individual - Sony BX designed for Corporate clones
Not that I'm biased... -
Personally if I was choosing between the two I would go Sony all the way.
It just has a lot more going for it. -
-
Er, like what? Okay you've got the corpo docking block on the Sony if that's your thing - but Sony build quality (Z1, TR5) is terrible. Perhpas they've improved, but note how the silver on Vaio touchpad buttons systematically comes off afer a month of suse leaving a white plastic underneath. If the used and abused look is good then Sony might work for you - don't you just love the way Vaios allow for personalized look - unique palm marks appear after a few days....
-
(In reference to a 6800 in the A series)
They did? Link?
I honestly thought they did nothing to the A series. A change like that would require quite a bit of rewiring...
The one distinct advantage that the Sony would have over the Asus W2 is in the screen. Specifically, it's a UXGA screen (1920 x 1200) as opposed to a WSXGA screen (1680 x 1050). -
OH, well ok. I think they updated the page. Originally it was only a WXGA screen on the 17" BX series, which is pretty nasty. Now it's listing the WUXGA and WXGA+. Thank goodness, but still, I love the WUXGA screen (I've had one before), but I would give it up for all the extras that come with the W2. The W2 is so much thinner also. You can't look at the numbers, because the pegs are adding to the numbers, but when you have it in your had, it's just about 1 inch thick.
-
I guess people have different needs. IMHO, the entire selling point for any 17" Sony laptop is the gorgeous screen (which is perfect for post processing photos!). If the 6800 rumor is true, Sony will have a winner on their hands.
-
Heh well feel free to correct any details I get wrong (I actually have a job so can't spend all my time researching and posting
)
1st: Discount the docking station all you want, but it's a hugely useful feature. Don't knock it unless you've tried it. If you had, you'd know how useful it was.
2nd: Higher res screen.
3rd: DVI output on both the laptop and the docking station.
4th: Multi use bay (allowing me to switch out a burner for more storage, or nothing, to save weight, based on my need). And if I want I can even plug the module into the docking station. Genius.
5th: Shared batteries. Allthe batteries in the BX line share batteries.. which means if both my wife and I get BX's but of different sizes (based on our needs) we can still share batteries if we are on the road (thus negating the need to have an abundance of extra batteries due to using multiple formats).
6th: SATA hard drives... which I believe perform better? At much higher capacity (up to 240 gb)
7th: Built in camera (I admit this is more of a nifty feature than anything else, but still BX has it, W2V does not).
8th: Both a touch pad AND a pointing stick. Most people can get buy with the touch pad, but some prefer the stick. Nice to have the option to choose.
9th: Biometric Security (again more nifty than must have.. but still a nice added security feature).
10th: additional battery charger built into docking station (so you can charge multiple batteries at a time instead of just one in the laptop).
As for the W2V benefits listed?
"Looks to die for"
That's rather subjective, I think the BX looks pretty good, and quite frankly the looks aren't going to help me work or play any better.
"W2V brushed black metal is cool"
Again, not going to help me work or play any better.
"W2V slot loading"
Yeah that's neat... but that additional complexity of engineering just means it is more lilely to break. Plus.. again it ain't going to help me work or play any better.
"W2V PVR"
I have a TiVo that works much better thank yah very much. No need to have it in my laptop.
"W2V Sub woofer"
Nice to have... but sort of a half measure since even with a sub woofer, the sound coming out of a laptop isn't going to measure up to a real set of speakers/subwoofers. And with the docking station, it will be really easy for me to plug into my , much better, set of speakers (not to mention any of my other peripherals). Besides I use a true 5.1 channel headphone with mic for my gaming anyway. And when I'm on the road, it's more likely that it wouldn't be appropriate for me to be blasting my laptop speakers anyway.
"W2V Individual"
Yeah... well... again.. not gonna help me work or play any better.
Anyway, we all have different priorities. Mine are all about how something will help me in my work and in my play. -
Hey, could you show me where you read about the A series having the 6800?
-
Yep they did... but I don't see it on their site any more. From the look of things they seem to be in the process of phasing out the A series (ton of them in clearance/refurbished and a much diminished model line available new).
I remember being just as surprised as anyone else might have been. But it wasn't an Ultra so I didn't pull the trigger. -
How long ago was this? If I'd known, I might have bought when I was wavering between Sony's stellar screen and the great graphics in the Dell. Now it's a bit late, but it'd be nice to know that Sony is finally getting more ahead with graphics.
-
A few months ago? No more than two or three, since I had concluded a few weeks ago that I would go Dell.... got sucked in by the 40% off coupon. (of course after placing my order I paniced and canceled it... since even the XPS2 didn't give me EVERYTHING that I wanted... mainly the docking station).
sony bx series vs ALL of asus
