hello
i own an ASUS A8JS and i found the speaker rather weak.
so im considering to buy an external speaker.
would a 5.1 or a 2.1 be more compatible with my model?
im not sure where to check the sound card but some mates of mine told me that 5.1 only works on PC since they got more plugs and depending on the sound card.
so a little help will be grealtly appreciated.
i dont want to waste money on 5.1 if i cant use it to the maximum potential.
thank you

You'll need a sound card to utilize 5.1 speakers, so if you want a 5.1 speaker system, you'll need to invest in either a USB sound card, or a ExpressSlot sound card.
-
if you go with the 5.1 setup you will need an ext.sound card to run then properly.
as for which set up, that depends on the room where you are using them.
if it's a dorm room then 2.1 is plenty, if it's a living room and you want surround sound then perhaps you cound look into a 5.1 system.
as for reccomendations they are as follows:
2.1
logitech z2300
Klipsche Promedia 2.1
5.1
Logitech
z5300
z5400

if you still have questions comeback and post them here. -
I agree with Cori. Invest in an external sound card such as the popular Creative Audigy for Notebooks.
A good 2.0 speaker system is the Bose Companion 2.
The Logitech X-530s are excellent 5.1 speakers, and offer great value. -
If you're in a dormitory setting, a 5.1 system will probably give you too many headaches with wires, and plus, they produce way too much noise. A nice 2.1 system like the Logitech Z-2300 is a great choice.
-
I have the Klipsch Promedia 2.1s in my dorm room. Great speakers, though, they are a little more expensive than the Logitech Z2300s.
-
not really, they are roughly the same price if you know were to look and what time of year you are looking.
-
ok, thanks for the responses.
i have went to the store today.
and checked out a few more speakers.
im kinda interested in altec lansing...the shape is kinda interesting.
what you guys think about altec?
here are a few of the speakers that i saw today btw.

http://www.nexus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=45_129&products_id=640
and of course the highly recommended Z2300
the guy at the store highly recommended the altec, because he personally uses it.
which would you get guys? the most bang for the bucks.
thank you so much for this yea, sort out most of my dillemas. -
well given those choices I'd say the z2300's or the Altec Lansing's but I would also recomend the THX version of the Pro Media 2.1s
-
I would highly suggest the Z2300. I have a A8js hooked up to the Z2200 (the old model) and they sound excellent. The z2300 has smaller satellite drivers (only 0.5 inches smaller) , but they should still sound great.
-
yerr
the altec seems interesting because of the wireless remote control.
i just find it much more convenient with the remote, so i can just sit back and adjust the volume when watchin music.
but i really want the house shacking music and the z2300 probably will give the best result. -
I would recommend you ditch the external sound card and just purchase Logitech Z-5500, which can utilize your SPDIF output.
-
check out the 5500
wow, its out of my range.
im just an average joe who wants a good speaker that is above average.
im not sure how much different is the logitech compared to the Z2300
if the sound output is much different, then i would stick with the z2300.
however if the difference in quality is minimum, then im more favoured with the altec because its much easier to use because of the remote really and it look better.
is there anyone who uses altec? whats the sound quality like?
as for Z2300, i know its loud enough to bring down a picture on the wall, i dont doubt the power of it. -
logitech compared to z2300???
the z2300 is a logitech.
I'm confused -
Shortly after purchasing, and while waiting for delivery, I questioned myself: "What have I done? I just spent so much money on speakers! I must be crazy!" When the speakers arrived in one MASSIVE box, I thought my insanity was confirmed. But as soon as I heard the first note emit from these speakers, I realized that I would have been crazy to purchase any other.
Words cannot describe the sound quality of these speakers! Even home entertainment speaker systems, costing 3-4 times more, cannot match them.
You will not be disappointed. -
oh hey phill
sorry, i mean comparing the logitech to the altec sound in general.
but considering what my other friends have been telling me, i might stick with the logitech.
unless of course if the salesman can convince me the otherwise to purchase the altec.
since altec is kinda cheaper.
and yea, starchild.
this speaker is kinda temporary for me because when i have enough cash, i might go for dynaudio since i got a friend who is a fanatic about sound system, and he's been advicing me to get those brand. so when i get a bit of cash, i might go for the high end ones. thanks for your advice though.
and pretty much thanks to everyone who has responded to my question. greatly appreciated guys. -
hmmm, well good luck with your purchase.
I've got both the ProMedia 2.1 and the z2300. I like them both.
as for the Altec Lansing, if you do get them, let us know how they are. I might decide to get a third set for the family computer. -
my 2.1 blows pretty loud.. it's a 5 year old harman Kardon. bass quality is great. The sub is pretty much larger than other 2.1 models i've seen.
If you don't want to buy a 5.1 sound card, just get a 1 to 2 female heaphone plugs and plug both the Rear and front line there, it'll produce the same quality, the onlything left is adjust the EQ. -

I can vouch for Altec lansing's sound quality. I have 2 sets by them, the 121i, and the FX6021. Of course, there's no comparing the two, but even the 121i is better than speakers twice as expensive The 6021 is the one that's worth every bit, though. Every note is as clear as the sky on a sunny day.
I would recommend a sound card in any case, though. Integrated audio is simply not up to scratch. -
WTH, no one told me about the size of the base.
first time i turned it on, it shooked my whole room, and the watch that was on my wall fell on the ground.
i went outside the house and i could hear the base even when the window was on the other side of the house.
i F**kin love it!!
hahahahhahahaha
im just preparing to get complaint for my neighbours
this sure has the power.
big bang for bucks for sure.
thanks for everyone who added their opinion.
(ps: altec fx4021 sound sucks, so i ended up gettin this one, no regret.
phill, stay away from that evil fx4021) -
