hey i just got my Z70VA a couple weeks ago and all is amazing, exept for one little thing that is getting reaaaly annoying. when im typing and try to rest my wrist/arm on the edge of the keyboard near the touchpad, i get these little static shocks. it only happens when i have part of my hand on the keyboard or that general area, not if i just touch the part that shocks me alone. what the hell is with that? it doesnt' make any sense and i've tested out other possible causes of this shock-like pain but that's the only solution that makes sense. does anybody know whats wrong and what i could try and do? thanks

that's weird... sounds like you're acting as a conductor between the two areas. I don't really know of a solution to this as this seems to be a circumstancial case... where maybe it's just the environment you're in.

Does it always happen at a particular place? (i.e at home?)
If so, maybe you need to humidfy the air around you somehow... dry air attracts electric charges.

There's a similar issue with Sony's Vaio line. The discussion and documentation are here.

The overall gestalt is that it can be "normal" to get these, not everyone can feel them, and it doesn't necessarily mean the notebook is faulty (although faulty grounding, etc, is a possibility). On some, it can be hit or miss on different samples of the same model. Some folks have tried switching components, and that can occasionally work (but is not guaranteed by any means).

Static discharge between any parts on my laptop would really concern me... I'm sure most of us know how deadly static can be to any electronic component inside, and if it's happening on the other side of the case from where those parts are, it's too close for my comfort. I'm not sure what the issue is here, but I would try to identify where the voltage is coming from if I could. If it's just static buildup from the environment, then probably grounding yourself before touching the laptop would prevent this, but if the shocks are a result of some internal voltage shorting to some part of the case, then you'll probably need to see a repair tech or send it in. I dunno if you can get inside to look around without voiding the warranty, or if you're tech savvy enough to want to yourself.
If it isn't being caused by either of my situations, then it has to be coming from somewhere; electricity doesn't just appear, it either has to be static buildup or a voltage being applied by a source.
Either way, I wouldn't ignore it too lightly... my $0.04 (inflation adjusted).

What happens when you use the notebook in a completely different part of the house or perhaps in a completely different house? Do you experience the same in different environments? For example i get thge same thing in my basement with my m5n but never anywhere else. I have a rug over tile in a damp basement. I believe environement is the culprit here. Though i can say with fair certainty this cant be good for your lappy

after driving in my gym clothes to go to the gym... well my track pants get stuck to my legs... (hair)...so it could be caused by u building a charge on ur hands some how and then when you touch ur Z70va it will shock u.. i dunno.

Or is it shocking you when you think of something bad? shock therapy.. lol.

also try different hand positions and other peoples' hands..

Then you may just want to try to get used to that shocks? it might electrically fun to be shock resistent.?

    Good Luck,

    Thanks,

I occasionally get it too with my Z63A. I don’t know the cause, but I like to attribute it to superhuman powers.

Are you on the concrete floor, or carpet... are you barefoot?
It doesn't sound as bad as one of our customer's had it with his Z80K.
That thing hurt... required a motherboard replacement to fix the grounding issue.

Whooooooa scary. Hasn't happened to me yet.

Only happens in your basement eh? If you can, stay out of your basement or wear rubber flipflops or something. You can get a cheap pair at your local Chinatown or dollar store for like 50cents to a dollar or two.

Dang so strange, yet it happens.

This would definitely freak me out if I were in a basement and my notebook started shocking me.

actuall right now im not getting any shock at all. yeah i think that it's probaly some envioronmental factor or some dumb thing. im just going to hope that it goes away and if it doesn't i wont worry myself over it. its just enough of a shock to be slightly annoying anyways. thanks for the help
