hi all,
after installing a fresh xp, i did all the tricks with autoendtasks and waittokillapp settings to decrease shutdown time. however, after I click shutdown, my comuter does not shut down unless I click the show hidden items button in the systray. When I click it, all icons close one by one and after a minute or so, xp shuts down. all suggestions welcome. thanks

1. undo the tricks with autoendtasks and waittokillapp, and then retry.
2. also try using the task manager to see what application hangs. -

Generally, sometimes when I feel a little lazy I would shut down my computer with a bunch of application running in hopes that XP will just close them anyways, provided everything has been saved.
I personally don't use those to programs to help make my shut down time faster.
Here's what I would do to test, restart your notebook, don't open any applications, then hit shut down and see what happens, if certain programs hang, or .dll hangs or anything.
Then you can start working on those to figure out what's going on.
Do you have any problem going into hibernate and coming back out? -
no actually I have no problems or any hung applications. everything seems perfectly working but the systray icons do not go away unless I click them. however, this morning I installed UPHClean from microsoft update which is: "UPHClean is a service that once and for all gets rid of problems with user profile not unloading." and this resolved the issue. thanks for your concern

When i first got my notebook this was happening to me as well. I re-installed the OS and did not put media direct back on or any of the software that Dell installed. I didn't even install Dell Quickset or the utils. I have not had an issue since.
strange shutdown problem
