Hi all,
Have you got a great idea for the forum...is there something you would like to see? Why not give us your suggestions on how to make this great place even better.

OK - I'll start
change the settings in the search function so we can search by Asus model numbers - us new guys get a whack upside the head if we ask questions that have been answered before yet all the Ausu model numbers are 3 characters and the current settibg require a minimum of 4 for a search term ...
this can be changed in the vBulletin software easily I believe and would make search useful here in Asusville ....
-
Yea, I've mentioned it to the Admins, but I think it wasn't picked up
But a very good point, such popular topics as IPS, and pretty much 70% of ASUS models have 3 letters. Actually, I'll ask the admins and see what happens.
Thanks for the reminder -

How about a dedicated for sale by owner thread here?
How about a link to this forum from the what laptop should i buy thread? (u know the place where nobody from here really visits). Asus is the biggest section on this entire forum while it gets the least ammount of shout outs in the second biggest section. Thats weird!
How about a dedicated asus review forum and support forum you know kind of like the one you see on nbf? -
Well, that's the thing, there was speculation about splitting the forums, but that would just complicate things, and it would be like the NBF forums, which is not what they want(I'm not saying that either is right, or wrong).
I'm not sure what the first suggestion is implying though... -
Suggestion: Less stickies, IF at all possible! Or merging things that might go together.
Organizing the Asus forum is gonna be a toughy. By far the most popular section of the forums (other than the what to buy) and loaded with enthusiasts (more topics to cover).
Our 3 asus mods will sure get the job done WELL -
Q, get yours now, and join us! JOOOOOOIN US!!!!!!!
And regarding the search:
-
Thats good news on the search front...hopefully that will help fix many of the issues.
On another issue, I was thinkin about putting together a ASUS news from the Web thread...either fortnightly, or perhaps weekly depending on whats going on. This thread would basically be any ASUS related news with links to those news sites/full stories. Let us know if you think this idea blows or not.
Also on the point about the # of sticky's. Personally I think its fine at the moment, the only one I would like to remove is this one, which I will in a few days after everyones had a chance to see it, and make some suggestions. What I would like to see is some sort of graphical separation betw. stickys and other posts...much like the annoucement is separated...I think this would help draw new peoples attention to them esp the FAQ's (great job on those by the way)....at the moment I think newbies come to the forum get overwhelmed with all the posts and dont even see the needle in the laying on the top of the haystack.

I'm involved with another vBulletin forum with 70,000 threads, over a million posts and similar users online at any given time and we saw no real peformance difference with 3 letter searches - and we run the slightly slower previous version of forum software - it is a hassle, just time consuming, to reindex the database, but its not difficult or a big problem - just takes a while
another solution is for the forum admin to simply add specific search phrases to the "include" list which ignores the character limit - it should be easy enough to develop that list - maybe just post a thread that asks for all 3 character descriptions - model numbers, things like "IPS" etc - there are probably just a few dozen search terms that if added to the include list would address 85+% of the search problems
-
I think ASG suggested a very good idea.
To add on,
How bout making a sticky, with a ready made list of three letter words to index (the most obvious ones) that we want to be search-enabled and everybody can just add to them. Of course, everyone must first check whether or not the 3 letter word they want to add is in the list already. they can just do a simple browser search command on the page to check. Umm. Might be extra work for the mods- erm. for a few days/week while the sticky is up to compile whatever everybody's suggested into the list. but if the list is already comprehensive to start out with, there shouldnt be much addition. -
Anyone want to make a page explaining the general differences between the models. For instance what is does the J stand for in W3J.

The thing about the search is a great idea, but I just always add Asus in front of whatever Asus topic I"m searching for.
Like Asus IPS, Asus W3J, Asus Z70Va, etc. Seems to work for me.
I think the way the Asus forum is divided up is working out just fine with the recent organization done to it the last couple of months.
It's just about right now. I also think many Asus forum goers do not visit the what to buy section as much because most of those questions tend to get answered in the Asus section.
I know this isn't how the mods want it to be because that's just too similar to NBF, but that's just the way it is, but not to that degree.
I like it the way it is and don't really have any suggestions other than the comments above.
Everything's great~!

Ratings for resellers of asus products.....perhaps a thread at the top of the main asus page
-
.....since some people will be new to buying from different vendors instead of directly (i.e. dell, toshiba), they may be intimidated
-
How about subforums for the following:
-
Also, a picture gallery for different models would be nice
-
oh, a subforum for reviews and pictures
-
2 little boxes and a question that asks if this was helpful: yes/no
-
i like Seb's idea, although i have no idea what "6 Asus OT" is >_>
-
The subforums have been discussed, but rejected by the admins, they don't want it to be 'split up' a la NBF.

I just thought I'd add that I have been a little disappointed at some of the bad language that is slipping past both the mods and the filters. Perhaps we could try to keep the Asus forum more clean in general. I recently have been posting in the Asus forum and I must say the other forums seem to have a lot less bad language. Perhaps mods could edit out posts and give users a warning, and if they continue to use swear words ex. then perhaps a couple day suspension. I even see this from some of the members who have been here for a while, and who should know and follow the rules.
-
Hi, just a suggestion, maybe the mods can combine some of the stickies into 1 thread instead of having 7 or 8 up there, which I feel clogs up the forum
Some things related to performance, video guides etc can be combined IMO .... just a thought... -
I know I'll be smashed upside of my head if I suggest another sticky, but anyways, here goes:
I know that Asus has a TON of models, and all the model numbers can be confusing. I was wondering if someone (I can take time off and do it myself too) and make a "Model listing" that is categorized by screen size. Discontinued models can be shown in red, and others in black. And maybe just indicate what processor, screen sizes, and GPU. I think it'd be pretty helpful to people who want to narrow down their choices (because screen size is what people look at, and then the processor, then GPU).
Yay or Nay? -
While not as detailed as what your proposing, such a list already exists on the ASUS website
I sometimes wonder if people are shopping from the forum only, and never take a look at ASUS's info.....maybe its too obvious/simple and people forget about it being there?
But I know about half of the questions asked on this forum are covered in the specs+extra info on the various ASUS notebook webpages....that said if you can be bothered to put the list together, then all the better.....maybe we can slot it into another sticky to save space.

This is going to be a suggestion for another sticky (sorry!).
How about a list of all the .exe and .dll which come pre-loaded on the notebook (the ones you see in the Startup tab when you run msconfig), what their functions are, whether they're critical or not to the optimum performance of the notebook, and suggestions for alternate software to use when applicable? -
I would like some new layout colors if possible. Notebookforums has gray, dark, and straferight and other forums also have other color schemes. I am one of those people who get nauseous after staring at a white screen all day. If it isn't too much trouble can you make a scheme with a dark background and maybe white or lightly coored text?
-
But yeah, I can compile a list -
we need to take away some of the stickys ,there are way to many on the asus forum
