The big names (Dell, Toshiba etc) probably have resellers in your state, so must charge you state tax, the smaller shops (like Geared2play and Proportable) are only in one state, so if you don't reside in that state you don't have to pay state tax (up front) but you should declare it on your taxes at the end of the year and pay extra tax on state taxes (quite what you are supposed to do in states where they have no state income tax so you don't fill in a state income tax form I'm not sure).

Currently, we only have offices in Pennsylvania and legally, only ordered shipped within PA are taxed.

Legally - that's how it is........ but as long as a company has employees of some sort in an office in your state, they have to charge tax....... Gateway was one of the first to have problems caused by this..... They had "offices" where you couldn't go and buy a computer...... but legally they had to charge tax.... some people sued them over this and I don't know what happened --- but soon after that "gateway country" stores opened up in all of those states...... so they could still collect tax, but if anyone questioned it - there was a place to go.

I hope that makes it easier to understand. The biggest problem is making sure YOUR state is getting your tax money..... because if they take it from you, it has to go back to the state.
