some vendors say gear2play and proportable are selling this 'updated' one

but why does it have a 1yr warranty (proportable) like a 'built on asus' notebook, when ensembles are 2yr? and why no mouse or carry bag, like a 'built on asus' notebook (I think).

As of November 2005, the ensembles were changed to 1 year global warranty and no accessories. All accessories have been removed- carrying bag, mouse, etc. EXCEPT for W2V which still comes with remote control. The first shipment of W3V came with 2-year sticker, along with first shipment of V6Va which will have 2-year global warranty but these are exceptions and all future notebooks will only come with 1-year.

thanks for the heads up mike, i was out of the asus 'scene' and just enjoying my gen I w3v.

and my friend was interested. Boy, Asus got cheap eh??? where's the Asus perk?

Would you or anyone know if this Gen II with 100GB Hd and 1GB memory runs hotter? I presume it is more RPMs... though I didn't check. Don't think more mem would add as much to the overall heat than a faster HD.

mike, why does your site have the w3v as 100GB drive, but 512Mb on the memory?

Yeap, they added something but remove something else. The HD speed was reduced from 5400 to 4200, increased from 60 to 100. RAM went from 512 to 1024. Bag, mouse and warranty reduced, although you can still upgrade your warranty back up. It would actually run a tad(1-2 degrees if anything) cooler.

Whoops, typo. Just corrected it. The reason was that it was adjusted after the first version was sold out, guess we over looked that one. :p

... Asus changed the configuration and changed around the warranty and so forth to get a certain price point....... it's still worth every penny, but ram and hard drive were bumped up and warranty and accessories were kicked down... otherwise the system would be another $100-200 more expensive.

At the time they were brought in, their research showed which setup would be best for that time of year and also the end of the model year........... companies have to make certain decisions based on a large pool of potential buyers --- and also take into consideration people who have already bought the unit..... but at this time, this is what you've got to deal with.

Hmm... authorized? Hopefully, I dont think I'm doing anything illegal... :D Just kidding, yes I am. As for everyone that sells ensembles? You mean like etailers or some guy in the alley? :p

ha. yes, I meant etailers. if one sells ensembles, then that etailer is a 'authorized' asus reseller?

i'm trying to find out how to determine if a place is.

one thing was, i didn't see laptopextreme on asus' 'where to buy' list. i saw newegg and zipzoomfly, but they're authorized?

Does being a authorized reseller 'mean' anything from the point of the prospective buyer...

I buy a ensemble = i get 1yr warranty from Asus right? Not like I won't get warranty if I had inadvertantly or advertantly purchased from a unauthorized reseller.

Not all Ensembles are 1 year warrantee, no mouse, no bags. In fact the W5F to be available will have more:

    Optical Mouse
    Carrying bag
    Protection bag

    2-year limited global hardware warranty
    1-year battery pack warranty

The optical mouse will most probably be a bluetooth one, since there is no RF wireless for the optical mouse.

Actually, your comment really has no bearing..... the warranty and the accessories are up to the Asus office to specify.... they are custom ordering these systems from the home office--- just like you might order a custom system from us or someone..... they're just ordering a lot more at a time.

So if they decide to stick with the way they've been going - then they will not order those things and their ruling is all that North America would recieve.... I'm not sure but they said the holidays went very well.... and that doesn't stand good for the future of their included accessories or extra warranty........ basically they swapped those with increased storage space, more system ram and it looks like more people bought them....

    ... so we'll see.

Any frankly - I think Mike's company started after he was pretty well entrenched in the forum.... you've got a couple months under your belt right Mike?

There are only a few places that really deserve "bashing" and we never need to mention those......... but companies like newegg and zipzoomfly simply don't and most likely can't offer you anything but a place to buy the product. Some people are cheap and don't care about that...... but then they'll use people like us for their information and for help when they need it...

That they are so are the middle and the last. This is perhaps the hardest industry to be in. Really have to be ontop of your game to compete.

I'd have to say the first two borderline suck...... there's a lot of work. In our first two years, there might have been 500-1000 Asus laptops imported altogether...... and even after two years there may have been 2 other companies who started selling them with us..... that didn't help obviously because we had a good product that others needed to be made aware FIRST.......

But I guess I agree with the last year thing..... that would be the year that sucks and keeps on sucking...... till it sucks you dry and you collapse.... Luckily I don't know that feeling, but I would imagine you can't tell yourself it can only go up from there like you can at the begining.

I agreed completely that the laptop industry will only get larger. We have already converted our desktops to laptops and friends of mine are converting. By 2008, just a guess, no more new desktops will be in anyone's home except those extreme gamers, replaced with millions of laptops.

desktops will always have a place in homes. Home theatre pcs music servers. For raid arrays. offices. gaming. i would never replace a desktop with a laptop.
