I just unpacked a new w2v and after using it for a short time noticed a faint buzzing noise whenever i touch the touchpad - either moving teh mouse or just resting my finger. There is no noise when i use a USB mouse. I updated the touchpad drivers without any change. Very odd, anyone else?

Does the sound seem to be coming from the touchpad itself or from the screen, speakers or somewhere else whilst you're using the touchpad?

The noise is coming through the speakers. When i mute the speakers no touchpad noise, when i turn up the volume then a lot of touchpad buzz.

Try going into your volume control and muting the video channel. Shouldn't effect anything else but it seems to help a lot with stopping unusual noises.

I haven't heard a good explanation as to why it happens but for some reason that channel seems to be particularly susceptible to interference. There's still a few sound issues that Asus really need to address with the W2V so hopefully they'll fix that one at the same time.
Does anyone know specifically what the video channel is for? Nothing seems to stop working when it's muted.

Darn it, Philip
I was just going to post that trick which I found out by chance some 10 minutes ago as my first post on this forum. I've had trouble with interference from my harddrive via the speakers since day 1. I'm using the latest realtek drivers on my w2vb. I use the 6 speaker setup in the driver with a 5.1 set of speakers plugged in the audio jacks up front.
Anyway I'm glad to be rid of the interference. And with regards to your concluding question, I was going to ask exactly the same thing. With the video channel muted nothing seems to change but the interference... And certainly videos play with sound as before.

Hehehe. Sorry for stealing your glory Pieter
I downloaded an interesting interview with a senior member of the team working on Windows Vista. The interview was specifically about the totally new sound system built into Vista. Anyway as part of the interview he admitted that there were channels in the XP volume control that even he didn't know what they did. He wrote the program so what chance have we got?!?
On the sound issue I'm still having problems with sound in games among other things. Lots of background noise, sounds not being played correctly etc. Has anyone else been having similar problems?

Thanks guys for helping us with similar problems. I was aching all day when I realized the BUZZ. Having an audiopile ear I was almost apauled ( sp ) to hear a the buzz. I could wave my hand near the touchpad and hear the faint sound of swamp crickets. I did do system restore thinking it was some kind of confict. But I didn't realize that when I first tested this laptop I had sound in the background drowning out the buzz. But when I got in a perfectly quiet room to test the speakers and tune them with my spectrum analyzer I was stunned with the buzz. Turning off the VIDEO?????????? did work. Again what the heck is that for? I guess that is for future use. I did go ahead and tweak the W2v and got some cool results for laptop speakers. I only could get them using dual eq's. This will work for people with musicmatch plus. I set the eq in musicmatch it sounded and read well. then I used the eq in the realtek soundcard and since it tweaks differently than MM, it tweaked it out nice. I could hear bass notes . I will post pictures of the eq's so you can set yours and see what you think. I tested it with everything from nickleback to depeche mode. As far as the laptop I really like it alot, more so now that the buzz is gone. I tweaked it out with tuneup pro and a couple other programs and it is quick. I gave up a HP dv4000 for this and it was a big improvement at the same speed. For others that hate the fan noise , I am reading posts that speedfan now is starting to work with the w2v. Double click on the speaker (volume) icon on the bottom right of your screen. This will bring up the volume mixer control. If you don't see the video slider there go to "Options" then "Properties" and tick the box for the video in the "Show the following volume controls:" area. Once you've got the video slider there simply tick the mute check box.

Hehehe. No problem.
The funny thing is I'm an AussieJust living and working in London at the moment. So I agree the poms definitely fluked it. Like I said to my friends though we had to let them have them for a bit, they were in danger of forgetting what they looked like

I decided that even though i could 'mute' the buzzing that this really wasn't a satisfactory solution. I spoke to asus tech support who instructed me to return the laptop as DOA. My dealer (NTCW in vancouver canada) explained to me that the distributor must inspect all returns/exchanges to confirm they are in fact DOA before a new unit is exchanged. My dealer told me today that a new laptop has been shipped for me.
I'll let you know if it also has the buzzing...

That would be good if you could let us know. I might be sending mine off too if this is the case.

I recieved my replacement W2V and, frustratingly, it also makes a buzzing noise through the speakers when the touchpad is touched. Naturally i am now wondering if this is common to all W2s or just bad luck.
Question to W2 owners out there: how many of you have experienced this problem and how many of you have not? Maybe include which version of teh W2 you have as it is somehow linked to the video sound channel...
