Hi. This evening I was replacing my hard drive and I lost one of the mounting screws which connect the hard drive to the bracket.

Where can I order another one? It seems there is some variation in the size of these screws between brands. Is there a better way to get one than by purchase? Am I right in suspecting it's a bad idea to use the computer without that screw?

HDDs generally have 4 mounting screws - and as is the case in most engineering solutions, this is overdone for the problem being addressed.

As long as you still have the three screws, the lack of a 4th will not impact or place the HDD at risk since it is being held securely by the other three points. I've stripped the occasional case or other screw, and the absence of a single holding point is nearly always inconsequential (except for something like a heat sink).

How much effort and cost you want to put into getting a replacement depends on how much your personality can't stand to be without perfection. In the future, always follow the rule of repairs which is having a secure and stable place to put those things while you're taking apart your tech :).
